Canada’s federal party leaders were quickly put on their heels in the first moments of the English language debate Thursday, the last face-off before voters go to the polls in the election — and their feet were held to the fire throughout the rest of the night.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet and Green Party Leader Annamie Paul each faced questions on their leadership qualities and shortcomings from moderator Shachi Kurl at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que.

As the topics moved into climate change, Indigenous reconciliation, affordability and the COVID-19 pandemic, all five leaders defended their records and plans. But Trudeau, who is seeking a third term as prime minister, faced the harshest scrutiny.

The election will take place Sept. 20, 2021.

I'll give Global News a rare thumbs up for opening comments, which the other channels blocked. Nothing douchier than posting a DEBATE of all things, and have comments censored.
  • I still can’t believe they were debating about giving native people clean water .
  • @mikeobrien6704
These five should move into a house together and record a reality show. It would be hilarious!

what the hell kind of debate format is this? How is anyone suppose to give a detailed answer in 45 seconds? Or when they are all trying to get their few seconds in on the debate questions? This was pointless chaos
  • @kimbeckner9240
MrTrudeau….. why are you STILL accusing Mr Harper of YOUR problems when you have had 6 YEARS to fix these problems?
  • The moderator was clearly confused… thinking that she was participating in the debate.

I like the Quebec guy to bad he doesn’t care about the rest of Canada

I seriously believe I live in a clown world.

Blanchet "I'm not interested in leading Canada."
  • This was a joke. "Okay let her respond. 5 seconds... and we have to wrap this segment up." I think Canadians could deal with 3 hour debates where we actually hear what they think and can have some back and forth. This was pathetic

This debate was awful. There were lots of loaded questions, not everyone was asked the same questions, and there was not enough time to properly answer the questions. It felt like the question-givers were trying to argue their own points or to discredit the leaders through their questions. The organizers and journalists did a terrible job here. There was little to no journalistic integrity.

this moderator is awful. tells someone to le the other candidate speak only to tell them they are out of time 5 seconds later.
  • @sks_8845
I don't care if you're right or left, this is the most pathetic assortment of candidates I've ever seen in Canadian politics. Just a bunch of talking heads.

This is completely embarrassing, acting like a bunch of children….we have roughly 38,136,287 who live in Canada and these are the best people we could get 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
  • The moderator is completely crazy, you can't have a debate with a moderator asking questions like she's a blogger at Huffpost
  • @theneumann7
I don't like the way those debates are done :/ First, the time allocated is very short and does not enable to construct a real deep answer but only to shoot short buzz words like "i have a plan", "it's better for Canadian" etc. It's like they undermind the capacity of people to analyse a complex idea based on moral values or social/economic principles. Besides, even if it's important to ask sensitive questions to highlight the candidate weaknesses, it can't be the whole debate. They should also let time for them to present their vision, to show some data, and to speak about they own subjects. Finally, it felt like the journalist does not really respect them. They are professional and elected leaders, you shouldn't start by saying "i'll cut your mic" like they are children...
  • @Trielectify
I feel like they should separate these topics into their own debates and give more time for a full discussion and rebute. The reason they keep bickering is we have 5 people chomping for 5 mins.
  • @vaynovak
Oh my gosh, why aren't they allowed a proper time in which to respond? It is like a game show. 🤡
  • @kaidenvi
can i just say how hilarious it is that Blanchet acknowledged that Quebec is it's own country, then acted as an outsider and pretty much just watched the debates with us? what a dude!
