Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”

“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
— Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.

As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853–1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.

Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.

The "make a wish situation" joke is so self aware, won me over
  • This is just a really good wholesome roast, with a lot of empathy, and emotion.

That clip of his Congressional testimony... That hit. Hard. Even now!
  • @BryanDrew
People like Mulaney, Lorne, Chappelle and Colin Jost deserve props for taking this kid under their wings and boosting him up when he was down. Pete's mom deserves a lot of credit too for bringing up a good guy.

There's something about Pete Davidson, that every time I see him, I just want him to do well. He did a great job here, very funny and touching tribute to Jon.

I hardly know Pete Davidson or his work but this is the speech that actually brought tears to my eyes. The idea that his dad was directly impacted by 9/11 and that he called attention to Jon’s advocacy by speaking to Congress really made realize what an amazing impact Jon has made in society on multiple levels.

I wasn't expecting to cry out loud by watching a Pete Davison video. That short clip from Jon at Congress, and Pete's ending of the monologue had me weeping.

He did a great job with his speech. Super funny where it should be, and beautifully touching where it needed to be. It was also sweet to see he had so much feeling in it you could tell at parts he was fighting not to cry. He, like so many of us, look up to John Stewart.

Jon is a national treasure. He really cares deeply about people.
  • I remember seeing Jon’s speech about preserving funding for our hero’s that sacrificed EVERYTHING. It was that moment I realized that he’s more than just a witty personality on social commentary.

Never thought Pete Davidson would bring me to tears in this way, well said, Pete. It's unreal that there wasn't a board of entertainers, along with all of the responders, standing behind Jon Stewart when he took on Congress.

"He's my Knicks buddy, We go to watch them lose twice a month"..... -Pete Davidson

I love Jon Stewart. He's a hero in every sense of the word. In advocating for the compensation of 911 first responders required heart & courage & he has both. Kudos to him👍
  • @jwport580
Perfect match up. Davidson is not only blessed with an acute funny bone, but can speak to the heart about Stewart's efforts to recognise first responders' plight, which congress was prepared to ignore.
  • You could tell he was nervous…and handled like champ…right on! 🙌🏽❤️🇨🇦
  • @phoenixluk
I love Pete when he's able to be so genuine and so funny at the same time. Also, you'll never see him in fancy shoes. Yeah, we see those kicks.
  • @nomadicroadrat
Pete Davidson continues to amaze. He is naturally funny. I wish him continued success. Jon Stewart likes him. That says a lot.
  • @rustyelder
Love Pete's clarity. Sharper than he gets credit for.
  • @11matt11
Wow, that was such an amazing set by Pete. Really surprised how he hit the right note. Like his trademark, started awkward, then hit a real high. But that was absolutely the perfect tone of a young man, you see now the confidence, who's now coming to his own.

The power comedians have to make you laugh and cry and think in the same sentence! We need to protect out comedians at all costs!
