Alfred Blalock (1899-1964), a cardiologist (therefore, self-confident to the point of arrogance), leaves Vanderbilt for Johns Hopkins taking with him his lab technician, Vivien Thomas (1910-1985). Thomas, an African-American without a college degree, is a gifted mechanic and tool-maker with hands splendidly adept at surgery. In 1941, Blalock and Thomas take on the challenge of blue babies and invent bypass surgery. After trials on dogs, their first patient is baby Eileen, sure to die without the surgery. In defiance of custom and Jim Crow, Blalock brings Thomas into the surgery to advise him, but when Life Magazine and kudos come, Thomas is excluded. Will he receive his due?

  • This movie is so powerful, I shared it with my son, who now is attending the same school to become a cancer specialist, all I could say I’m a proud black mother thank you Jesus ❤

This movie is a testament to God's gifts. If you use them to glorify him, HE will reward you. If you wait for man to reward you, it will leave you bitter and angry. The fact remains that Dr Thomas , through his humility, used the gifts GOD gave him, to save lives and teach other doctors to save more lives. This is a true blessing .

Because of Dr Vivien Thomas, my mother had successful open heart surgery in 1966
  • Mos Def…. Is definitely an underrated Actor!! He’s brilliant in every movie I’ve seen him in . 👏🏽👏🏽

I watched this in 2004 and never forgot it. Working in technology sometimes I would have to connect electronics without seeing with my eyes. I would see with my hands. When it would connect, I would smile and say Something the Lord Made. Now I will be going for a quadruple bypass on March 25th, 2024. Somehow mention of this movie came up today in the news and I watched it one more time. I will be benefitting from the Work of this man and thinking about Something the Lord made. Thank you, Dr Thomas.
  • I had not seen this movie in a while it had me in tears again. Dr. Thomas didn't need to go to medical school he just needed to be in the right place and God taught him to be a doctor, sometimes you just need to be in the right place at the right time and God will do it the rest.
  • I am so impressed with the information laced with history and how being Black is an honor to the ability to survive in deep prejudice....I too am a survivor...Thank you.

I'm in awe of Dr. Thomas. The way that man handled himself with such grace, poise, and humility, in and out of that operating room, despite everything he had been through, was just incredible (for lack of a better term). Everyone has a heart, but his was truly Something The Lord Made. Rest peacefully, Dr. Thomas, and thank you. It's a shame we didn't give you your flowers when it actually counted.

It's obvious to have compassion for Dr. Thomas. I believe Dr. Blalock was a good man, and Dr. Thomas would not have completed his mission on Earth without Dr. Blalock. They were soul mates and they loved each other. This was their journey. It's not about recognition. It was about saving lives. God saw fit to exalt Dr. Thomas when the time was perfect and profound. Bless them both. They couldn't have done anything without each other.
  • And I quote "It's not about you. It's about the work. I like the work." Now that's a calling from God right there. Indeed something the Lord himself made. I love this movie.

When I walk through Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, I always take a moment at his statue. Impressive, indeed
  • Love this movie because even though society doesn't recognize you God always does. And Dr Vivian finally got to see what God had put inside him and no one can take it away from you.
  • This show teaches one how to remain humble in difficult circumstances and at the right time the Lord God Jehovah will exalt you. Humility.

My baby has benefited from the work these two doctors have pioneered. She had heart surgery in the first year of her life and is now in school healthy and well. Important to let God lead our life.
  • An absolutely beautiful story of a man who had had a dream and a humble heart; served others for decades; and in the end, he was finally and truly honored.
  • While in the Army, I served as a Combat Medic and saved four lives, and that was the greatest feeling in the world!

Amazing story. It did sucked that he didn't get any recognition for the Blue baby operation research or got the chance to go to school but in those times what do u expect. I'm so glad the Dr. gave him a chance & trusted him being that he had no medical training. So happy he ended up doing what he loved to do in the end. We have so many smart, exceptional black people in the world. :thanksdoc:
