This was one of our most anticipated films of the year. Did it live up to the hype and keep this the best horror franchise ever? Let’s Discuss.

  • There was another person in the theater who was really into it like I was. We both lost our minds when they started chanting "that" line. Soooooo awesome.
  • Saw this one tonight in a Dolby theater with a packed house. Soooo fun. One doesn't go to an Evil Dead movie expecting Oscar-worthy plot lines, character development, etc. We go for a depraved, satisfying, unhinged bloody mess and boy did this deliver! The remake (2013) still is my favorite in the franchise because of its sumptuously dark cinematography/sound design and commitment to a very serious, harsh tone. I'll admit that I'm mostly just looking for a parade of shocking set pieces. In my mind I compare "Rise" to maybe ED2 because they both definitely have some satisfyingly creative squishy moments, but also more than a few obviously cheeky bits as well. here's hoping we won't need to wait another 10 years!

19:07 Dang bro, that was deep! That's the kind of thoughtful analysis we need in horror reviews!
  • I'm so excited for this!!! I'm seeing it tomorrow with a friend!!!!! I have not seen any trailer for it I'm going in blind. I love the franchise and I loved the ash vs evil dead!!

I saw the movie last night after work, and was a bit let down myself, like you sir. I was expecting an Americanized Demons 2 film.

Loved it. You expect certain things from Evil Dead, and this one delivers.
  • loved this movie one of my favorite horror movies of the year so great gory and intense.
  • Il watch this later because going to see this tonight can’t wait
  • I agree with your points on the High Rise setting. Its really mostly a one setting movie. More of the high rise couldve been used. Like Poltergeiest 3, Demons 2, and even Satans Slaves 2 - much more of the building was used. We dont even really see any other apts. i also feel the fact that it was in LA wasnt fully utilized. It couldve been anywhere really as their wasnt anything distinct to the area

I just got out of this movie! I thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting was phenomenal and I appreciated it got to the point quick and we weren’t waiting 45 mins or longer for the action to start. I just had a great time watching this in a theater all to myself! 🙌
  • Glad to hear you liked this film. Can't wait to watch it. And I share Jason's frustration, how is it possible that Ash vs Evil Dead was cancelled? I wish it had a revival as well as Hannibal. xD
  • Great review guys! A lot of people are talking about the sounds and loudness of this movie.. and it’s really true. That scene where the record player is playing the incantations with the bass boosted is perfect. The theater felt like it was vibrating when he was saying the “kandar” lines. Absolutely fantastic stuff
  • So glad you brought Ash vs Evil Dead everybody been reviewing this movie and not including the show but everybody wants to cry about Bruce Campbell not being in this movie...but great review!!

Loved this movie. I thought putting it in a family context was an inspired choice and made it that much more fraught. Satan's Slaves 2 made slightly better use of the high rise setting imo but that's a nitpick. And the conclusion of the family dynamic in the climax was terrific and chilling the more I think about the implications.
  • I'm stoked for this! I'm happy it's not too deep. I need a palate cleanser👍

I loved Evil Dead Rises. The photography and sound design was fantastic. The gore was extreme. Tons of fun and very artistic.
