In both examples 1 & 2, you've worn a very contrasting top to the slacks. That makes a short girl (I'm also only 5 feet tall) look even shorter. Go for a less contrasting top and we'll look taller because there is no visual line dividing us. Example: Black slacks with a black top or even a gray top. You can even wear lighter colors and not look bigger IF the top and bottom are closer in color rather than contrasting. 👍👍
  • I’m petite with apple shape. Always appreciate videos showing the looks you’re talking about.

I'm also 5 feet nothing and vaguely aware of some of these things but seeing the side by side comparisons really makes it obvious!

Petite with big hips & thighs here, don't tuck my top in ever and only wear longish tops. Also I don't wear trousers as much as dresses.

The first point... the rise! Petite clothes makers seem to think that we only have short legs. They don't proportion things out so the bodies are too long, the shoulders are too wide and the sleeves are too long!

Yay, someone that finally gets it when it comes to rise! That's what makes it so hard to find jeans or pants when everything out there is high rise and super high rise. Even mid rise can be high on me (I'm 5' also). I have to pull the high rises way up and they are extremely uncomfortable and look terrible. And they usually migrate to my actual waist and create the baggy crotch like you have pointed out. Thank you for the video. You're right, some days I don't care about appearing taller but for some occasions I do and this has been a quite informational video.

The obvious color contrast between tops and bottoms is the bigger problem. Crotch length and silhouette is also important, but the defining line between a lighter colored pant and darker top really does so much more to accentuate "shortness".

I love the side-by-side comparisons. The new info for me is the importance of the rise.
  • I am so glad to find your videos. I am 5' 1" and always have problems with pant lengths being too long, sleeves being too long on jackets, long sleeve blouses. Like you, I have a lot of weight in my thighs and hips. I NEVER wear white or beige or light color pants (even in the summer). I prefer to wear either black, navy or dark brown color pants or jeans because I think the darker color makes your leg look a little longer as well as more slender in the thighs and hips. I do wear light color tops though as I am narrow shoulders and small on my top half.

You do a great job love your tone. The rule of thirds would also really help your outfits look more visually pleasing.
  • @tlo4827
I can finally see it. Great job.

Great content, thank you. Your side by side comparisons are so helpful. A few years ago I started sewing my own clothing. That was when I really figured out my own proportions. I had to measure everything…not just hips, waist, bust but the vertical as well. I found that my petite stature is mainly due to a short distance between my shoulders and my bust line. Even if you don’t sew, do those vertical measurements- natural waist to crotch, bust to natural waist, waist to ankle, you get the concept. Now you are armed with valuable information to help you make wise purchases.

Thank you so much. Being a 75 yr old short woman I do find it difficult at times to find what would be appealing on my short stature. Also I'm short waisted, full hips and chunky thighs imo.
  • Thanks so much in so many ways! Had avoided ankle pants when they started to become popular but could never put words to why they weren’t right for me. Celebrated when wide leg returned but currently having trouble with warm winter layering! Also thanks for reducing the constant consumerism. Only want to spend on a few reasonably priced yet quality pieces right now.
