Finishing the Painting of King David Dancing in Jerusalem (Acrylic Grisaille Technique)

Published 2024-05-25
After many hours of work, and countless layers, I finally finished up my painting of King David dancing in streets of Jerusalem! This was done in the Caravaggio grisaille technique (my best attempt at it) and shows King David dancing with all his might before the Lord as the Ark of the Covenant came back to Jerusalem. My goal was to really capture his joy as the ark (God's presence) comes back to Israel.

Rejoicing in the King, 16 x 20, Acrylic on Canvas

The digital image will be used for a cover illustration of a commentary on the book of Samuel by Russell Stendal, but I have the original painting and it is available for sale. Contact me if you're interested. I haven't yet posted it on the gallery of my fine art website.

I really enjoyed painting this one!

You can watch the video of me "bringing it home" here—where I add some final highlights, details, "halation," and sign it! It's those final nuances that make the difference.

(I apologize for the audio error. I had to record a voice-over to explain the painting process.)

Thank you Matt. This was very instructional. I'm going to apply what you taught in this lesson to a painting I had put away for a while. It will be enjoyable to tackle it again with this lesson in mind. Blessings to you and your family.

That was so nice of you making a prayer 🙏 before painting
  • I always love watching you. You are amazing and I love this painting! Just beautiful! I was a bit confused with this new method. I understand the concept but couldn’t tell if you were adding color to the sleeve or background to make the King pop forward.

Hello, beautiful piece! Is enrollment opened? And if so, how long will it be open for?

Nice painting. Although could've been better aesthetically if the hands and arms weren't cropped out. Just my two cents.
