The world faces a climate crisis, one which is currently on track to radically disrupt all life on Earth. The global built environment is a major contributor to this problem, meaning our profession is uniquely placed to steer the built environment towards a sustainable future.

#myfutureplanet is the RICS call to arms to the next generation, inspiring them to join us to help build the future planet, today.

Surveyors play a key role in tackling the environmental crisis, creating sustainable communities, delivering essential infrastructure and ensuring the economic and social well-being of the next generation

God this channel amazes me with every single video. Great work again.
  • I imagine future cities will look similar to a city in a post apocalyptic movie. A lack of cars in the city center and all the buildings covered in plants.

As someone who is studying social geography and spatial planning, most things in this video feel very familiar :) What I love about this channel is that you make the knowledge very accessible for people new to the concepts, yet they are also interesting to watch for viewers that are a bit more experienced on the topics. Always nice to see the enthusiasm for urban planning and architecture in the comments here.

I'm an engineer for building physics and I'm drawn to other fields of interest, wanted to switch to IT but everytime I watch your videos I think "My job might be not too bad"
  • This is all good, but you didn't even mention PASSIVE heating, cooling and lighting. Most buildings could get all the heat and light they need (during the day) from sunlight. Windows and solar tubes, along with intelligent design can cut down on energy consumption across the board. Cool air can be stored underground and piped into upper floors. Stairs and ramps instead of elevators, solar ovens built into the the kitchen, cold air intake for the freezer in winter; basically removing the need for electricity anywhere we can.

One easy, "fix in the right direction'', would be to allow homeowners the right to grow food in their own yards, (front and back) and to allow water harvesting on their property. No Government or HOA regulations. Where I live, I can have a small garden but to turn my entire back yard into a food forest is not allowed. There are also restrictions on water harvesting. My roof can generate about 50k gallons a year with the rainfall we receive. Without harvesting the water runs off into the streets and ends up in the Gulf of Mexico. So I have to rely on ground water to water my yard.
  • I love how your videos spread positive mindset towards the future. Keep up the good work!

Videos like this are why the B1M are my favourite YouTube channel. Loving the sustainability angle on this one and would love to see more!
  • Good to watch a video transmitting some positive energy amid all the heart breaking climate change news! Good one ☝️

I never got very far in school and this channel is such a source of knowledge in so many area of life. I humbly think that mixing green areas throughout our urban concrete jungle is one of the most cost efficient solution easily deployable right now. It helps eliminate hot spots, provide living places for insect and animal life ( birds, squirrels, bees, ants ) and maybe most importantly, it help with the sanity of the citizens, calming the mood and chilling the spirits, like a small scale forest therapy.

Your channel always remind me why I love the built environment. I particularly liked this one as it highlighted the direct link between the built landscape and our environment. After years of being in administrative roles I decided to return to school (part-time), in 2015, to pursue an industry related degree. December last year, I graduated with a BSc Hons in Building Surveying. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice, as I am still looking for my first role within the industry, but your channel always remind me why I choose this path. So thank you and keep up the great work!

Thanks for another great video!! These videos make me look forward to my future career (I'm studying civil engineering) to see what I and many others will be able to accomplish.

I’m actually doing a research project this year in high school about how architectural design can be used to improve human health and the global environment.
