  • As an Englishman living Spain, I notice that there is a quite a bit of cronyism/corruption at council level, but at national. level politicians are stamped on hard and being sent to prison for 10+ years for corruption. Meanwhile in England, the Govt. accidentally loses 3 billion pounds to their friends and donors during the pandemic but can't be bothered to get it back. But the UK doesn't do corruption, so we'll call it an oversight..

As a Dutch man I agree. And it has to stop. Lobbying is just a fancy word for corruption. And your critique of the EU is spot on, you have a new fan !

I try to explain this to my dad all the time about corruption in America, but he never gets it. All he sees is "street corruption". The cop that asks for $20; the building inspector that wants some cheddar. The corruption in America is much more advanced. It's the lobbying, the tax rates, the courts ruling that all contracts result from equal bargaining power, etc.
  • I've always understood the fact that corruption in the European Union is on a much more sophisticated level than corruption in the Balkans for example. But the term cheap corruption and industrial scale corruption brings it home . Great explanation.
  • in germany we just make corruption legal. so no more illegal corruption.
  • @liul
In the southern countries we are aware of the corruption we have. The other countries are just in denial about the corruption they suffer, which allow them to feel superior
  • He's right about surveillance...if you are in public office your actions should be up for scrutiny. They want to watch us 24/7 walking down streets, monitoring our online activity while they lurk in the shadows doing as they wish.

I am a dual Czech and Slovak citizen, living in Denmark, so I follow the politics of these 3 countries and I voted in every one of them (Czech and Slovak parliament / presidential elections), and in Denmark I voted in EU parliament elections due to being an EU citizen. I noticed a common pattern. The prime minister sits on the EU council meetings, votes for whatever EU law proposal, and then comes home and then starts hallucinating about the "Dictate from Brussels". It's a disgrace how the heads of government avoid responsibility for decisions they themselves are part of. I agree, let's livestream all EU council meetings. Afterall, it is the equivalent of the US senate, which also has public sessions. There is one problem though, all of the deals will be done in backrooms instead, and the council will be a show. But at least there will be a videotape of the prime ministers voting for a certain law, which the public will be able to criticize them for.

Varoufakis has been spot on for years about the ills of the EU architecture and the dangers the international/banking system pose to democracy everywhere.

Having lived in the U.K. for quite a while before moving back to Hungary actually made me realise the same. Here corruption is crude and obvious, while the the Brits do it in a sophisticated way. We play with dimes while those countries play with the world.
  • Yanis is brilliant, so sad to hear he has been attacked, get well soon Yanis
  • @gilgamecha
You are right to be angry Yanis. We all should be angry.

I used to disrespect Varouvakis when I was in highshool back in 2014/2015 because I didn't understand what was realy going on. Now I view him as an absolute hero of a gerneration! ❀
  • He should make comments about the grand scale corruption here in the UK or in the United States because it is eye watering 😳
  • @cheri238
Thank you for your intelligence as always, Yanis. Keep the world-wise❀
  • @talkshop1628
We should start demanding prison sentences for these people
  • The public mostly has no idea what is going on within the European council or parliament, we are too busy trying to survive! There is no oversight to protect the people!
