GUAN Chenchen delivered as the final competitor of the women's artistic gymnastics competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games to win balance beam gold. She finished ahead of teammate TANG Xijing, while 2016 Olympic all-around champion Simone Biles matched her bronze medal from Rio 2016.

After a tense wait, Guan's score, a 14.633, flashed confirming the gold medal. Tang earned a 14.233, while Biles scored a 14.000 to win the bronze.

Guan's medal is the first gold an athlete from her country has won in women's gymnastics since DENG Linlin also claimed the balance beam title at London 2012. People's Republic of China gymnasts also finished 1-2 at those Games with SUI Lu taking silver nine years ago.

Biles had qualified to all four of the apparatus finals, scheduled for 1-3 August but eventually withdrew from all but balance beam. Her beam routine Tuesday was the same as she has used throughout the 2021 season, except for a modified dismount. Instead of Biles' usual full or double-twisting double back dismount, she opted for a double pike. _____________________________________________________

You know who deserves the gold medal? The female commentator! She knows the gymnasts’ routines so well, what they did during qualifications or previous competitions, she immediately picks up the connections that they missed. She always gives positive commentary and doesn’t magnify the mistakes. She’s the best! 👍

I love it how Chinese gymnasts congratulate and hug other gymnasts. It looks like they really got a very healthy competitive spirit

Am I the only one who’s obsessed with Tang Xijing’s glitter, stature, smile, routine and pretty much everything? Can’t take my eyes off her! ❤️

Suni in the background cheering on and applauding for another country’s athlete is so good to see, back in the early 2000’s all the teams looked like they were complete enemies with other countries, glad that’s changed!
  • Suni is so supportive! Look how she was so nervous for Guan Chenchen. Great sportsmanship

WOW. Tang Xijing's routine was absolutely flawless. Stunning how fluid her routine was, and how beautiful her splits were. It's interesting to see how each country puts emphasis on different aspects of performance, and it seems both China and Russia put a lot of work into grace and an effortless appearance, while the USA appears to put more emphasis on power behind their moves. As a former gymnast myself, I can't appreciate this enough.

ellie black is in tears, not out of sadness but out of pride that she did her beam program excellently. I also think that her emotion is due to the fact that she is competing in her third olympic games, which is an extraordinary and almost unachievable achievement in this sport. I would have loved to see her win the bronze medal
  • @KonekoCat.
Xijing every time the camera is pointed at her, smiling and waving lol. Love this girl.🥰

39:02 Simone rushing over to congratulate ChenChen with a smile on her face (there is a wonderful still photo on the internet) and the American contingent cheering her on during the entire routine is just wonderful to see
  • These commentators are the ONLY ones who fully explained who Simone is, what actually happened to her, (defining the twisties, and why she could not perform other routines) and what a champion she is regardless of the results in this competition. The male commentator even said, "all informed spectators", rightly pointing out that no one who knows anything about gymnastics faulted her for withdrawing from the team competition. NBC commentators, gymnasts themselves, were negligent at best. They could have explained so much better.

Ooh how I love it that at 38:45 Suni, Jeff Graba, Cecile Landi, and Simone were all super excited and cheering for Guan Chenchen even though she’s a competitor. That just shows great sportsmanship. Loove how all the ladies at this year’s Olympics showed very positive attitude towards each other ❤️❤️❤️
  • I can't even walk on a flat surface without tripping over myself. These women have all my respect!!!!

Absolutely beautiful artistry by these athletes, and I love Guan Chenchen, she's so refreshing. A teenager talking to her friend and fellow gymnast not paying attention to the score, I thought was absolutely so sweet. So young and such a pro at the same time. I love that Simone Biles helped direct her during the picture-taking because there is so much to know about conducting yourself while not performing your routines and Simone was there to help. I look forward to watching Chenchen's Olympic career grow, and I hope we see more of her.

What a beam final. China showing their supremacy, Biles being Biles and absolutly deservingly winning a medal, everyone staying on, Suni rooting for them all, Flavia being a queen, Black being a bit of an underdog, making it close. Such a joy to watch!
  • My favourite part of this is Chenchen having no idea what to do in the medal ceremony and Simone basically mothering her the whole time 🤣
  • @emmar6304
sad for urazova because she did such a good beam set in the all around. but i love the chinese 1-2 after the disappointment in bars and team finals

I just really loved this final. I loved Biles's comeback for beam bronze, and also just really loved everyone cheering on each other and the clips of Simone and Sunisa cheering so hard for Chengcheng. Just appreciated the sportsmanship of cheering hard for the person they know will most likely outscore everyone, to not only cheer on all gymnasts but to also make up for the lack of audience.

Guan Chenchen proving you don't need wolf turns in 2021 🙌
