The Babington Plot is named after Anthony Babington, a young Catholic nobleman who became the central figure in the conspiracy to kill Queen Elizabeth I. Babington, motivated by religious zeal and personal ambition, sought to free Mary, Queen of Scots, and seat her on the English throne. The plot, however, was orchestrated with the knowledge and manipulation of Sir Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth's astute spymaster.
