How the russians missed it? Ukraine didn't tell the US what they were going to do. The Pentagon leaks like a 100 year old boat.

Ukraine holding the pipeline terminal and possibly the nuclear plant would pose a significant problem for Putin. Why ask permission from the US, just do it, you're on a roll.

This is not an incursion. This is a "special military operation" so as to protect Ukrainian speaking people everywhere, de communize Sudzha, and bring Sudzha back home to Ukraine where it belongs. The people of Sudzha have "overwhelmingly" voted in a referendum to rejoin with Ukraine. Sudzha is "historically" Ukraine and has been since 1664 and was a town in Sumy, Ukraine. #SudzhaIsUkraine

Ukraine had a choice to send its brigades to be grinded defending untenable positions in Donbass or do better. They chose to do better. Score big PR and morale points, capture lots of POWs for exchange, facilitate infiltration of sabotage groups, put pressure on escalation-averse politicians in the West and still keep options open.

They built up on the border against Belarus. Then they negotiated with Lukasjenko and withdrew towards Kursk. Putin and Lukasjenko thought they were superior and scared them off, but it was a faint, a very clever one.
