Doctor explains YEAST INFECTION (CANDIDA/THRUSH) in men and women | Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Published 2024-07-21
In this video Dr O'Donovan explains genital candida - which is a yeast infection that can affect both men and women.

1. What is a Genital Yeast Infection?

A genital yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by the overgrowth of Candida species, particularly Candida albicans. This infection can affect both men and women, though it is more commonly associated with women. In women, it typically involves the vulva and vagina, while in men, it can affect the penis.

2. What are the Symptoms of a Genital Yeast Infection?

In Women:

- Vaginal itching and irritation
- Burning sensation - especially when going to wee
- Redness and swelling
- Thick, white discharge: Resembling cottage cheese, without a strong odor.
- Pain during intercourse: Due to irritation and inflammation.
- Soreness and rash: In the vaginal area.

In Men:

- Itching or burning sensation: Around the tip of the penis.
- Redness and swelling: Of the foreskin or head of the penis.
- Thick, lumpy discharge: Under the foreskin.
- Pain during urination or intercourse: Due to irritation and inflammation.
- Soreness and rash: On the penis.

3. What are the Causes of a Genital Yeast Infection?

The overgrowth of Candida is usually kept in check by the body's immune system and the presence of other microorganisms. However, certain other things can disrupt this balance like use of antibiotics which can kill beneficial bacteria that keep Candida in check. Hormone changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or hormone therapy can create an environment conducive to yeast growth. Uncontrolled diabetes can result in high sugar levels, promoting yeast growth and conditions like HIV/AIDS or medications that suppress the immune system can lead to increased susceptibility.

4. What is the Treatment for a Genital Yeast Infection?

Over-the-counter Treatments like antifungal creams and ointments: Such as clotrimazole, miconazole, or tioconazole, applied directly to the affected area. Vaginal suppositories: Containing antifungal medications.

If these don't help - go see your doctor.
