Homeless encampment keeps returning to El Cajon neighborhood

From the street, you can see holes in fences, trash piling up, and clothing strewn about.

But walk farther down the dirt path off First Street near Interstate 8 in El Cajon, and you can see huge encampments, dozens of bicycles all over the place, and a large, covered makeshift shelter.

“It is dangerous,” said Maryann Ostermeyer. She lives around the corner and is beyond frustrated with the situation. “The other day, I saw a mother walking with her three kids and I saw this maniac pop out of this fence and start lunging and screaming at her.”

Making this even more concerning is that Naranca Elementary is just a couple blocks away and school starts up again in a few weeks.

  • @MR..2REAL
at the 67 and 8 on ramp is crappy too...
  • San Diego's veteran journalist, Steve Price, literally knocks it over the fence with this great report. While there are homeless individuals by different circumstances and situations, it is only in the past 8-10 years that we citizens have been pushed by politicians to feel that it is a "right" and OK to be high on drugs and alcohol and encamp on public sidewalks and byways. We desperately need to stop making excuses and being tolerant and put our foot down on finding ways to get these folks the drug and housing they need to get clean and out of the craters they are in. Get clean or face even bigger consequences and get clean.
  • @sarbantz
All of us in San Diego must open our homes and take street homeless in. There is no any other solution.
  • Unless you fix the root causes behind people's homelessness, forcing the homeless to move around won't solve anything.
