At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • Lately, my OCD has been horrific. It literally makes me cry to the point I hyperventilate. It makes me feel trapped.Thank you for this speech it helps me feel not alone. I know I need help I just need to find a way to get it. I am trying to be more honest with my family about it because I don’t want to deal with it alone anymore.
  • How am I just watching this now?? I just want to give you a hug! I've been struggling with OCD since 11 years old. My parents were the first to make me feel weird, guilty and crazy. They still do. Thank you so much. I identify myself so much with you!!!
  • @JRR812
One of the best talks about OCD I've heard
  • This made me cry so much. When you said about being stuck in the shower or washing your hands till they bleed. I'm struggling so bad. Having people help me do normal everyday things. The time I have felt the calmest in my life was on mushrooms and acid so it's interesting you said that

Such a great talk. I was diagnosed about a year ago and life is so much better after therapy. If you have it and are struggling, keep the faith. Trust the therapy.

her greatest blessing is being young...in age where there is solutions and openness...she is in college and has worked her OCD out to speak before a group...she is not in her 50s suffering an entire life and the consequences that follow...work issues, relationship issues, isolation...glad she has this awareness and got help
  • @Johnnycam1

  • @SkylarMixtape

Thank you Julia for an honest and inspiring story, its helping others feel less alone who have OCD and giving them support and reassurance. Your helping raise awareness for OCD as it is really hard to actually get it diagnosed. So if people see this and feel the same but didnt know what they may have, now they have an idea to at least try to go to a doctor with. This will help sufferers seek help and not shut themselves off from the world. Many thanks for your story and braveness in telling it as it must have been hard!

  • @tews123
Amazing talk! Being someone who has been on the old OCD roller coaster I know exactly how she felt. I never have gone down the holistic route. I think you need to choose one or the other.

Based on my personal experience I'm coming to realize that each human brain is unique in it's own way and forcing all people to think in the same format is one of the major factors which are causing stress, depression and mental illnesses. I believe that OCD is not the cause, but rather it's a side effect of the social systems people have constructed and into which people are being forced to fit in to the exclusion of their uniqueness.  "It's no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
