looking through the comments I don't see anyone else pointing this out... in the original DIY video, when the guy uses the hot glue gun, it's just a regular hot glue gun wrapped in cardboard.

It's a real life hack, just a little bit misunderstood. The whole point of this thing is not to heat up the glue, but to make money off the internet. And it absolutely works.
