Boatbuilders sometimes use them to create a curve on the back side of carvel planked boats.
  • I got one a few years ago that was beaten up. I restored it but never really knew what is was for. Now I do, thanks to you. Thanks for sharing.

Facinating stuff. I love old crates, boxeschests and stuff so i shivered a bit when you scraped the number off. Throug it was a good way to show how the skraper/plane works. Thanks as allways for the informative videos!
  • @daraven4714
It became a very useful tool in making our Totem poles in Alaska
  • I use these to smooth the inside of dugout canoes where the handles of spokeshaves get in the way.
  • @madroot
I found 1 of those last year at my local antique store!! 😁😁 I'll use mine as a glue scraper at times.
  • @dpitt1516
Never seen one before ................... Nice informative video James !!! Maybe they need to come up with a modern tool for cardboard boxes to take out stickers !!!!
  • @kevholmes513
I’ve had mine years and all I’ve ever used it for is scraping excess dried glue from panels before I clean them up properly and it saves my good sharp planes from getting stuck up with dried glue For that job it’s quite handy

I have owned one for years. Given to me by a friend that picked it up at an estate sale. He knew i liked old woodworking tools and thought i would like it. Now i know what it is . Mine is actually a Stanley Sweetheart.

I'M NOT KIDDING!! If you had some of these in the store, you'd sell out. Take a regular brown paper lunch bag and have them printed with your logo. They would be to have on hand when you give your riddle or joke at the end of the video. Perhaps the bag could come with a sheet of directions much like the instructions for using the bag that drops down from the ceiling when an airplane experiences turbulence. The "WW-BB" Wood by Wright Barf Bag. Instant collectable! Again, not kidding.

I think I'm from the last generation that saw wooden boxes used regularly in consumer goods. Coca Cola and other soft drink makers used wooden flats for both bulk soda (48 bottles or flat top cans), jarred goods, and the classic fruit & vegetable boxes. I have a love hate relationship with cardboard, and I just hate plastics.

Thanks for the video. I acquired 2 of them several years ago as part of a bulk purchase at a yard sale. Until this video I had no idea what they were.
  • Beavis and Butthead @ 2:14..." Heh heh heh heh... he said take the tool to the box...heh heh heh."

As a wooden boat builder I have one in my tool box, I did reshape a spokeshave iron since the original iron was made to scrape pine not hardwoods but most wooden boat builders have one, it’s easier to use than a backing out plane
  • @Ramplcro
This plane is somewhat used and modified by luthiers for making archtop guitars. Violin making planes which are the most obvious and less expensive/more common choice are usually on the small size for guitar size top/back.
  • @MarkBenge
i have a Pull Shave i bought a couple of years ago at Lee Vally. I feel like pulling gives me more control avoiding tear out in places where my plan is having trouble. its great to have both
  • @osliverpool
I've seen those a few times and wondered what they're for - it really never occurred to me that they're actually for scraping boxes.
  • Great video James. What about a video on a no11 belt maker's plane or a cabinet maker's sector?
