What we’re getting WRONG about metabolic health & weight: Robert Lustig, M.D. | mbg Podcast

Published 2023-12-22
Robert Lustig, M.D.: “The fat in the organs, the fat in the liver, the fat in the muscles that you can't measure by standing on a scale—it's the fat you can't see that makes all the difference.”

Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist and New York Times bestselling author, joins mbg co-CEO, Jason Wachob, to discuss how to actually know if you're metabolically healthy, plus:

- What you need to know about nutrition labels

- Why obesity is a red herring when it comes to metabolic health

- The truth about alternative flours

- Why treating chronic diseases is not “draggable” but “foodable”

- Why you should always protect the liver & feed the gut

Note: this episode was recorded in May 2021

Dr. Lustig doesn't know everything. What he doesn't know is 3 years ago after a not so good doctors appointment about my high blood pressure, overweight, fatty liver and sky high triglycerides I turned to YouTube for information and ran across his first video on sugar. It was so mind boggling I kept going to other videos he spoke on and made all of the changes he recommended. Before 12 months past I dropped 52 pounds, stopped taking 7 medications, 4 which were prescription and had that 20 year old feeling again at the age of 61. I would love to tell him thank you and hope he reads this post. I consider myself an educated person but I was so dumb in all this health and nutrition stuff. I am also a little upset I had to go to YouTube to learn this while going for physicals every 6 months with my PCP that only threw a pill at a symptom instead of how to totally avoid that symptom through diet. BP averages 125/65, triglycerides went from 388 to 44, triglyceride divide by HDL= 0.38 and I take nothing now.

I’m a 3 tour Vietnam combat veteran. In 2020 I was in VA counseling for chronic PTSD when I discovered via Dr. Lustig that my diet was driving my inability to solve my depression. I became a student of the effects of in appropriate consumption and changed my life completely. I’m now 76 and ride my bike 45 minutes at 4AM every day. My base line BP is 108/72 my glucose base line is 96. I eat zero sugar in any form. If it comes with a label, bar code, or in a package I don’t eat it. I only eat real food that I prepare. I take zero meds, have zero arthritis and zero brain fog.
  • "Real food has no label" What a great line dr. Lustig ❤😂🔥🥳🙏😁

Every time I listen to Dr. Lustig, I marvel at his brain power. He’s got to be one of the smartest health practitioners on You Tube. Thanks Dr. Lustig!!
  • I started following Dr Lustigs work 14 years ago back when it was still in a small corner of the internet. So good to see his work get out to a much larger audience over the years. He knows his stuff.

Finally someone telling the truth! This is not new for me! My mother is 85 years old and she doesn’t suffer with any kind of health issue. She is a very active woman working in her garden every day and eating from it. Everything she consumes is 100% natural, she doesn’t eats a lot of sugar but she eats a lot of veggies and fruits from her orchard and she is even healthier than her children living in cities! That’s a fact! She always say exactly all these principles to us!

Dr. Lustig is absolutely awesome. He’s all about data, facts, stats. He has no hidden agenda and truly wants to help people, especially children. Thanks Dr. Lustig 🙏❤️🙏

I now have not bought any processed boxed, canned or bagged food in 489 days. My health has improved exponentially and eating only meat has saved me tons of money and I NEVER have things molding or rotting in my refrigerator. NO more waste. Sugar withdrawal was not fun but after 2 weeks, I felt so much better. I will now have a much greater chance to live to my goal of the Normal healthy human lifespan of 120 plus years. ❤

Dr. Lustiq doesn't mince his words. He just lists the good, the bad and nothing in between. The hallmark of an effective medical scientist. Thank you to the host too.
  • @edforChrist
I have an annual physical next month and I specifically asked the doctor's office to run a fasting insulin and uric acid test and I was basically told NO! They said, "We wait until you have a diagnosis and then we refer you to a specialist and then they will run those tests." Wow, just wow! That's a quick look into what's wrong with the healthcare system. Fortunately, I have secured another avenue to get the testing I need.
  • Every time I listen to your podcast, I loose appetite to eat. I am grateful to have you in YouTube
  • Many thanks to Robert Lustig for making sure that we now know better again what healthy food is and what really makes us ill. Here in Germany, his work continues to spread and I expect that sugar will finally be branded in five years' time. I don't know of any work that should be more important for our civilization than his work. I personally have found even more physical and mental health through him. I bow to his work. Thank you very much.
  • Thank you!! Now I understand what has been going on with me all these 75 years! I got the answers today! God Bless I can now make the changes to help all my issues!!! At 75 I can do these changes! Jan

This is the best video I have seen in a long time on why we should eat really foods and the reason behind it. Dr. Lustig is amazing!
  • @matthewwood5754
I am very grateful for your work Doctor Lustig. You saved my life ❤
  • Much love and respect for Dr Robert Lustig! His book metabolical is a must read!
  • @gmo709
Lustig is great. He really knows his stuff. Someone has to get out there in front. You can see how this frustrates him (the organizations that keep doing things the current way).
  • @ylcalif3681
Lustig mentions that ALT (fatty liver) normal range has been adjusted upward (normal range is set way too high). So I checked my records. Labs "normal range" will vary. The lab my Dr. uses is Quest; and they still use the traditional 6 to 29 range. Really appreciate when hosts/guests in these videos help us decipher lab results. Thank you.
