Neuromyelitis optica: clinical features, diagnosis and management

2019-10-06に共有
Neuromyelitis optica is an aggressive inflammatory condition characterized by recurrent attacks of optic neuritis and myelitis. It is mainly caused due to an autoimmune process wherein antibodies against the Aquaporin 4 channel in the foot processes of astrocytes result in demyelination and various manifestations of this disease. Since the response to disease modifying drugs used in MS is lacking in NMO, and may even worsen the disease in NMO, differentiation from multiple sclerosis is crucial. The diagnosis of NMO is based on the Wingerchuk criteria. In this presentation, we discuss the clinical features, diagnostic criteria and management of Neuromyelitis optica.
