Corrupt (1920-1940) - Philadelphia: The Great Experiment

Publicado 2019-09-27
In the 1920's, Philadelphia was America's third largest city, with nearly two million residents. Philadelphians worked in factories that ran around the clock, flocked to speakeasies serving illegal liquor, and had plans for an elegant Parkway to celebrate urban greatness. But in every neighborhood, an entrenched system of domination by political bosses called the shots and reaped private financial rewards. It was the empire of the Vares - the family more powerful than any Mayor with a vice grip on Philadelphia's destiny. How will the city survive the grip of the Vares and what will happen when the Great Depression brings the roaring 20's to a crashing end?

The period of 20s - 40s were very important and foundational in all cities in America. If a city squandered or mismanaged those years, it would have lasting impact for next 100 years. Philadelphia is an example of a city that mishandled those crucial years.
  • I searched for the 1943 Philadelphia Experiment. But this was pretty eye opening.

Born in and spent 52 years of my life in Philly. It's not the place I was born, but it looks as if it was going downhill for a long time before I was born. People still vote for all the wrong reasons and don't look at the bigger picture, or think about what's down the road. No matter which party it is, one party rule for far too long is always a disaster. I'm sure those from back in the '20s and the '30s would be totally horrified at what Philly has become now.

it's kinda insane to realize Philly never truly recovered from the Great Depression and just kept spiralling from there, even almost 100 years later
