The House That Mustaine Built

As an entrepreneur, I’d like to take a page out of Dave Mustaine’s life book. The metal mogul has not only managed to sell millions of albums honing a craft that he loves, but he’s also an enterprising genius, founding multiple brands, including his own beer Saison 13 À Tout le Monde and award-winning wine vineyards House of Mustaine. He’s also got signature guitar gear and is the author of three books. Nearly 40 years ago, he founded Megadeth after being unceremoniously given his walking papers as the original lead guitarist of Metallica, where he co-wrote many of the songs on the band’s albums Kill ‘Em All and Ride the Lightning. Since then, he has been unleashing his own precise and intense brand of thrash metal upon the world.

In ‘94, he launched the first-ever official band website megadetrizona.com, which became a blueprint for millions of band sites that followed. With more than 50 million albums sold, five consecutive platinum albums later, Mustaine has just released Megadeth’s 16th studio album, The Sick, The Dying... and the Dead!, their first since the 2016 Grammy-winning Dystopia, a welcome return to the band's earlier sounds, filled with intense riffs, killer guitar solos, eloquent lyricism, and that crystal clear Mustaine snarl that's as strong as ever, even through a cancer scare.

Yet unfortunately, this mega-smart mega-mogul has also had his recent share of turmoil. In May 2019, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent an intense battle and recovery. Then, of course, the pandemic would bring all recording and touring plans to a grinding halt. Refusing to let any of these hurdles stand in the way, this metal giant has persevered and proved his "mettle" not only as a musician but as a human being. Mustaine sat down with LifeMinute and shared his new perspective on life after his health scare, the joy he continues to find with his wife of 30 plus years and two children, the coming of this album, new band members, and his current tour with Five Finger Death Punch.

Shit davey, im 50, ive been lucky enough to watch u come full circle. Metallica grabbed my balls n pull me outa music n 80's hell, but there is NO ONE, who has earned my respect and love more than u and the best thing that coulda happened to u and metal, was the long busride home on that hungover day, so long ago. One of my most exciting and just KIKASS things in my life, has been the introduction, dissection and pure pleasure I get in teaching my youngest son bout D.Mustaine & MEGADETH. THANK U DAVE, MEGADETH FOREVER.

I still think the Marty Friedman and Nick Menza Megadeth era is my favorite. Rock on Sr! I am almost 50 and have been listening to Megadeth since my late teens back in the 80s

Stay healthy Dave! Metal wouldn't be the same without you!
  • Thank you Dave Mustaine . Keep kicking ass the way you’ve always done! Megadeth was “my” band as soon as I discovered them. Still try to jam some Megadeth every day and it makes the bad days tolerable and the good days excellent.

Dave has been a hero of mine for years! I respect him for his guitar playing and how he conducts his life. He doesn't get the acknowledgement he deserves but that seems to be changing. The new album is mind blowing. Everyone in the band is represented in each song.

WOW, this was a great interview!! I’m not even sure why, but I’ve been rediscovering MEGADETH for the past month or so, and I have no say, I have a whole new found respect for Dave & his band!!! The guy has earned my respect All Over again—In fact, even more so now!!! Rock-On Dave✊🏼☠️☮️

I have a journalism background and I have to say, A+ interviewing skills! She is so engaging. Provokes an entire story with each simple one line question. Amazing work.

Cool that was new for me, Dave likes DANZIG😊 Both great artists, and singers. I mean Daves sound❤ No one couldnt replace his vocals in MEGADETH
  • Love Mustaine's guitar playing and guitar tone. He's definitely an influence for me 👍

Dave has a sort of Marmite voice, you either love it or hate it. For me his voice and his lyrics are inseparable. You hear him sing his lyrics and you believe the lyrics. He’s telling a story that only he can tell. If someone else sings the same lyrics they completely lose their meaning and impact.
  • Woah, Elektra is an awesome singer, I see where she gets her musical talent from, her dad, I bet Dave is really proud of her.
  • @david.leikam
Being a good bandleader is harder than most people think, especially 40 years later. 🎶
  • Cancer sucks and Im glad that it didnot hinder Dave’s singing. Megadeth has been my favorite band since inception. Ive seen many concerts and enjoyed all of them.

My intro to Megadeth, was Wake Up Dead, on a metal compilation tape, I bought in the 80's. I've bought every album since. :) I met him twice in later 1990s, on the Cryptic Writings and Risk tours. He was always nice to me, and nothing like the popular video clips show. I still rather hear Megadeth played live, than the albums though.
