Biking the Camino: Part Two // Castrojeriz to Santiago // World Bicycle Touring Episode 21

Published 2022-05-11
The second half of our journey along the Camino de Santiago brought us through many more fascinating towns and high into the mountains before we reached Santiago de Compostela. We had a handful of mechanical problems that slowed our progress, but we concluded our ride on the Camino Frances in Santiago before boxing our bikes to fly to Dublin.

  • You seem very skilled bike mechanics, which I guess is necessary for a journey like this.

Hello from French-speaking Switzerland:) I love your videos, congratulations for such beautiful reports (including with the jellicle cats;) I have 2 travel bikes, one with a chain with 3 x8 chainrings (one of which is very large for steep climbs). But above all, I was able to remove the disc brakes and replace them with V-brakes. The result is very continuous braking (without risk of skidding and a little stronger braking when it rains but I can loosen the cable (BBB tristop). As for the wheels/rims, I was also able to fit very solid old ones As a result, despite rocky paths and sometimes holes that I couldn't avoid (downhill), after 25 thousand km, I still haven't broken any spokes! As for the V-breaks, it costs me approx. €$ 16.- to change it and the complete system (very rare replacement) around 35.- On a solid steel frame, if you are a good handyman, you can have the parts that allow you to bolt the V-s breaks). If you pass in the region, I will gladly tell you a magnificent tour to do:) Have a nice trip and best regards^^
  • I've hiked a few different Caminos now, but wow, this camping and biking thing looks super fun!
