In this season for prayer and contemplation, we recently visited the quiet village of Sancoale, just next to Cortalim in central Goa’s Mormugao taluka. It is the time of Lent when Maria, I and Roma are having only fish and veg food. And we’re going to a little family-run place called Cardozo Mendes, a local taverna in Sancoale, closer to the Cortalim side, which has been serving superb home made fish since the past 35 years. The fish is so good that this little restaurant deserves to become famous far beyond Sancoale

Cardozo Mendes Bar & Restaurant
Near Old Church, Sancoale, Mormugao, Goa
Contact: 9822350887, 9673565091; Mondays CLOSED
Google Maps location: maps.app.goo.gl/sAPbmn9To8psiDar5

Costs we paid: 8 tiger prawns Rs 1,200, 1 chonak masala rawa fry Rs 530, finger chips Rs 100, quarter urrac Rs 60

To get there, if coming from Panjim side, take the Cortalim-Vasco exit on the new Zuari bridge, and turn right at Cortalim circle. Follow the road till the first right turn and take this right towards the old Sancoale church. Just a short way down, turn left and the first, pink coloured house is Cardozo Mendes

We decide to have chonak masala fry with rawa and tiger prawns. If we have space left, we’ll have tamso curry with Goan red rice. We are also going to enjoy some of the first urrac of this summer season. Unfortunately for Jaya, in veg there was only finger chips and salad.

The chonak fry is so perfectly spiced. This is a real rustic Goan food

We also enjoyed the absolutely beautiful tiger prawn dish in delicious, tangy rechead masala. I’m not exaggerating when I say eating that massive king prawn, I left like I was eating a steak. It was a perfect marriage with the rechead masala, just the right amount of gravy.

Some of the best food in Goa you’ll get at the village tavernas like Cardozo Mendes. What a satisfying meal!

Every goan household earlier used to stock urak for cold. It is and was used as medicine to cure cold. Whenever one has severe cold, the best goan traditional remedy is to have urak mixed with khadi sakar. My mother tells me that they have had this since 1950 to cure cold. Gr8 to see Maria knowing the good old traditions.

Wow fresh Urak . Goa & Kerala are two states ,where almost all eat at least fish . For many without a fish dish they will not eat 😊. By the way those tiger prawns are really large & look yummy .

Loved your “pigging on the prawns”. Such glorious king prawns what a great meal you must have had!!! Please do more of sea food videos as we inland lesser mortals really miss our sea food. The rubbery stuff we get is a sad excuse with the fresh sea sweetness missing.
  • Mesmerized with the size of tiger prawns, truely worth the amount. Apart from the restaurants you visit, your small drives around goa roads takes me back down to the memory lanes. Your content is truely amazing, keep up the good work 😊
