What is particularly mind blowing is that this is 52 years old. You cant find music like this anymore

I'm 72 and I was there on both days at the Fillmore East in NYC for this live recording...One of the greatest performances ever on any stage...Consummate musicians... Our jaws dropped...

He Allman Brothers always had 2 drummers!! The singer is Greg Allman and the lead guitarist is his brother Duane who got killed in a motorcycle accident probably not long after this concert. The band took a breather and then continued on. They are southern rock and blues!! AWESOME band that I grew up listening to❤
  • Mama Allman gave birth to one of the greatest blues guitarists in Duane, and one of the greatest blues voices in Greg. The band is largely considered the greatest live performing band ever, I am biased, and I totally agree.
  • Jaimoe and Butch Trucks immediately developed a unique relationship where the two of them became like one giant drummer—not because they played so alike, but the because they played so differently, and yet, in sync. Trucks was the more standard time keeper, driving the band with a thumping pulse, while Jaimoe exploded all around him, adding jazz swing and fascinating accents.
  • Duane was only 23 and Gregg was only 22 during this concert. Amazing.

Duane Allman is lead guitar, Dickie Betts is other lead guitar, and little brother Gregg is lead vocal and only 19 to 21 yrs old. Such a seasoned voice for a young man. They have got soul.
  • It’s a damn shame more younger generations won’t ever experience this music, unless they are exposed to this art. I can’t tell you how excited I get when I see people discovering this music for the first time! This band has produced so many masterpieces, it’s almost impossible to conceive. I can’t imagine hearing this, when it was new! This will never be duplicated/replicated.. EVER!!

I had the pleasure of seeing these guys 4 times, three times before Duane died. I was at the Fillmore East for this concert. These guys, along with Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Earth Wind and Fire, and The Mahavishnu Orchestra, where some of the most exciting live acts I'd ever seen.
  • Butch Trucks and Jamie played drums together for the better part of 50 years. Two minds, one drummer. Check out 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' from the album "At Fillmore East". It's a peak moment for this early version of the band.
  • (On the keyboard) Greg Allman's voice, at age 22, was iconic southern rock. It embodied soul, pain, and resignation. a sound well beyond his years. His brother Duane (on lead guitar) echoed those emotions in his solos. (Not unlike how Queen guitarist Brian May echoed Freddie Mercury's voice). Audiences loved the long jams they did. The energy was driven by the 2 drummers. I was 18 when I first heard them, and was a huge fan. I still like the studio version of Whipping Post.

"Why they sittin' down"?.....back then that's what we did, have a seat, enjoy the show, no cell phones, just pure unadulterated music, from the heart, musicians plying their craft.
  • Greg Allman is the singer, and his brohter Duane is the lead guitarist. You should check out Not My Cross to Bear from their first album. And keep in mind that Greg was only 22 at the time. Love your guys' enthusiasm!

Gregg Allman is the lead singer and keyboardist. His brother Duane is playing the slide guitar. Dickie Betts is also on lead guitar. And the two drummers are Butch Trucks and Jaimo. The bass player is Berry Oakley. Trucks was called the Diesel because he kept the time. Jaimo had been a jazz drummer and he was the first guy Duane recruited for the band. The catalog for these guys goes back 50+ years and I highly recommend you go down that rabbit hole. You'll love it.

Congratulations! You just witnessed the greatest live band of all time.
  • Duane (Skydog) Allman is one of the most celebrated slide guitarists ever. He did sessions work with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, etc. One of the absolute best EVER!
  • If you're just starting to get to know the Allman brothers, keep going, you're in for a treat. Super star band back in the day.
  • Yes - two drummers. They are playing different things. Jaimoe and Butch make it look easy, right? Two lead guitars. Both concepts unheard of at the time. Both the result of the vision of Duane Allman. The length is nothing compared to one of the Mountain Jams. The time spent on any of those is well-worth it, but pee before you sit down to listen. :) Thank you for your recognition of Berry Oakley, the bass player. He never got the recognition he deserved. Berry really died when Duane did. He just walked around for a year longer. The vocalist is Gregg Allman, Duane Allman's little brother. Duane is the blond lead guitarist. It's wonderful to see people who weren't around when the Allman Brothers came out giving them their props. Thank you for doing your part to turn new generations onto music that will enrich their lives. Just don't drive a car at the end of this song. You look down and you're doing 120 and you don't realize it. I speak from experience.
  • The first soloist is Duane Allman and he plays on a lot of iconic songs besides the Allman Brothers including Wilson Pickett's amazing rendition of the Beatles song Hey Jude. If you don't know what muscle shoals is look it up Duane was a session guitarist at like 22 for one of the most famous studios in US history he died very young from a motorcycle accident.
  • I remember being introduced to the Allman Brothers Band when I was in business school. The live album is fantastic!
