im very late but i interpret this as: the character was hurt by the shadow demon in the beginning, or it represents bad thoughts and they carry the bad thoughts/hurt with them even with a good person who they feel they are hurting and at the end they feel like they are as bad as the shadow demon or that they are just their thoughts But they're not, even though they had pain and made mistakes doesn't make them bad
