My Thoughts on the Paralympics: Are They Ableist?

Published 2021-08-03
In this video, I discuss my thoughts on the Paralympics, ableism within the organization, and Paralympian Becca Meyers's (forced) decision to withdraw from the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics due to the denial of reasonable accommodations.

I always look forward to watching the Paralympics, but hate how the media doesn't cover it as much as they cover the able-bodied Olympics.

I do not understand how someone who is DEAF AND BLIND could be refused an individual personal care aid. There is no way you can reasonable think that is appropriate.

The 100m dash was my favorite/best race in high school!! there was no way I was going to be an Olympian but I got to run a relay in the state meet. I don’t know much about the Paralympics but it does seem to enforce disability hierarchy :(
  • I think not only deaf blind have certain movements its also very vulnerable to trust someone to translate something to you in another language, its dangerous and having someone you trust makes thinks easier in my opinion

Giving a deaf/blind person a guide who doesn't know their signals feels a bit like giving someone a translator who doesn't speak the same language. "I know you speak Spanish, but this person can translate English to Japanese. That's close enough."

I am an able bodied person, so my opinion could be completely wrong, but it does seem strange to have disabled people compete to see who is faster or better at something than someone else, or whose body can perform better. Isn't the point of standing up against ableism to say that your body doesn't have to perform better than someone else's for you to be seen as a person? Once again, maybe I'm wrong...but I agree the things you said are important points.
