The year is 190CE. China is in turmoil. The Han Dynasty crumbles before the child-emperor. He is but a figurehead; a mere puppet for the tyrant warlord Dong Zhuo. It is a brutal and oppressive regime, and as Dong Zhuo’s power grows, the empire slips further into the cauldron of anarchy. But hope yet blossoms.

Three heroes, sworn to brotherhood in the face of tyranny, rally support for the trials ahead. Scenting opportunity, warlords from China’s great families follow suit, forming a fragile coalition in a bid to challenge Dong Zhuo’s remorseless rule. Will they triumph against the tyrant, or will personal ambition shatter their already crumbling alliance and drive them to supremacy?

The crucible fizzes. Allegiances shift. The fires of conflict stoke opportunity. Only one thing is certain: the very future of China will be shaped by its champions. Total War: Three Kingdoms is the next major historical strategy game in the award-winning Total War series.

"The empire long divided must unite; the empire long united, must divide. " Good job to CA for adding that in the trailer as it is literally the first line of the novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

For those of you who wonder what the BGM singer is singing, it was the starting lines of a old poem called “Drafted As A Fifteen-year old”. In Traditional Chinese Font version. This article describes the tragic scene of an old soldier who was homeless after returning to his hometown, and exposed the suffering caused by the military service system to the working people at that time.

The lyrics on the beginning is 十五从军征,八十始得归 (I joined the army to fight when I was 15, and finally I returned home at my 80s.). It is the first sentence of the original poem I joined the army to fight when I was 15, and finally I returned home at my 80s. Asking my neighbour in the past: Is there anyone still in my home? The neighbour says: The tombs there, surrounded by pine trees and cypresses used to be your house. When I take a closer look, I find that hares go in and out through holes left for dogs, and pheasants take off from the roof. In my yard grew the wild millet, and on my well sprouted the wild mallow. I cook some meal with the millet and mallow, a bowl of rice, and soup. The meal is done, but there is nobody I can share it with! I walk outdoors, and my tear drops on my clothes when I'm staring at the east. This is my own work of translation :) maybe there are some minor mistakes but generally I think you can understand what the poem tries to express: the horror of war and the terrible pain that ordinary people suffer. In this poem, the scenes of war are not mentioned, however, the author uses a veteran's story to show us how lasting wars and military service system in ancient China destroys people's happiness.
  • And we will have a documentary series covering this period... :-)
  • I dont play any totalwar game, but i have watched this trailer over 20 times .

They better make Lu Bu op like he was in dynasty warriors, Getting dumpstered by him was my childhood lol

The female vocal in the background is the former part of a Han Dynasty song (poem) "Old Soldier's Homecoming": 十五从军征, I serve in the army when I was only 15, 八十始得归。 And under 80, I finally retired and can return home. I asked everyone I met in the hometown: 家中有阿谁? "Is there any one of my family still left in home?" One served his whole life in the war, and when he retired, things remain peacefully as ever, yet the one's family is here no more

1:32 I love how Guan Yu knowingly and habitually puts out his arm to stop the predictably brash Zhang Fei. It is such a small detail lasting for less than a second but it tells so much about their brotherly relationship and goes to show that the devs have done their research - they know their stuff.

The only minor critique/nitpick I have for this trailer is the scene with Cao Cao. Since this happened during the time Dong Zhuo had the young emperor, Cao Cao is still only a minor minister/warlord and would most definitely NOT have an actual palace with dragon coiled pillars. It would have been more fitting if he went inside an army camp.
  • @Wuwarrior-bi2tl
I'm looking forward to all the scenarios, The Yellow Turban Rebellion, Alliance against Dong Zhuo, Battle of Red Cliffs. Cao Cao and Yuan Shao facing off in the north, Sun Ce Conquering the Wu Territory oh in gonna do like 60 playthroughs of this
  • @lordspork
Imagine being a normal soldier on the battlefield and you get ordered to attack Lu Bu, "Hell no, I blinked and that guy killed 5 people!"
  • @rickchen288
the lyrics I heard from the trailer are actually a poem from Han Dynasty era: 十五从军征, Joined the military while young and ambitious Already an elder by the time return, Run into hometowners with expectations: 家中有阿谁? Any of my beloved family still alive and well? Above four lines were sang during the trailer, And here is the rest, 遥看是君家, "Once your home is at a distance away, 松柏冢累累。 "now surround with evergreens and graves" 兔从狗窦入, Rabbits crouch from holes in the wall, 雉从梁上飞。 pheasants fly off beams in the hall. 中庭生旅谷, Wild weeds thrive in once the yard, 井上生旅葵。 mallows overgrow on the abandoned well. 舂谷持作饭, Grind the weeds for a meal, 采葵持作羹。 pick some mallows to make broth. 羹饭一时熟, Food is ready within a moment, 不知贻阿谁! But who is still here to share with?! 出门东向看, Step outside and face where sun arises, 泪落沾我衣。 as my armour get rainwashed by tears. this poem is supposed to be sad because it was written in the perspective of an ordinary veteran. During the collapse of Han Dynasty, many males were forced to join the local military and it was very common that other warlords burned or captured their hometowns before these peasants returned to their hometowns.

DO NOT PURSUE LU BU Edit: Just noticed Guan Yu's beard is not magnificent enough. Literally unplayable.

  • During my youth, I played almost all the Dynasty Warrior games, it was my life, from those games I learned so much about the war of the three kingdoms and it is an epic tale indeed, now my all time favourite strategy game franchise is teaming up with my favourite game of my childhood, or the story at least. Yes i just came in my pants.
