Digital Mode is REALLY Small| K7SW Ham Radio

Publicado 2022-11-27
If you have not worked a Digital mode for a while, the "Digirig Mobile"
from Digirig is the perfect way to get BACK into working modes like FT8 on HF or VHF frequencies.
Setup is so simple, it is hard not to get on the air.

See if your radio is listed on the website geni.us/Digirig

  • When was the last time you operated any digital mode on your Ham Radio ?

Got one for my FT897D. Fab little box. FT8, VARac, VARA HF/Winlink....does fine. Had to put ferrite on cable to confuser.

I use one with my TX-500. I love it. It works flawlessly. I use it for winlink, fldigi, JS8, VarAc, etc. all the software has no problem with it. I almost went with the IC-705 due to its built in USB sound card and cat control but with the DigiLink Mobile I have no regrets going with the TX-500.

Just another shoutout to the Digirig (and also Denis the owner). My field rig of choice is the FT-891, and as everyone knows it is *capable of digital modes, but you need to add an external sound device. The Digirig was THE SOLUTION. From my cabin on vacation, I easily do Winlink, FT8, and PSK31 with my FT-891/Digirig combo. It's the only way to go. Welcome to the Digirig fan club!! 73, Tim KD9LAI

I use the DigiRig with my FT-891 and have been very happy with it and its simplicity to attach and use. The only downside with the FT-891 is that I have to use a separate USB cable for CAT Control. But it has made my POTA and other portable operations a lot more fun. When you are using a limited antenna on portable operations it has provided more Q’s in the log. The FT-891 has a good number of menu items to setup for Digital operations, but they are well documented on YouTube and other web sites. The DigiRig is compact and really is a nice add-on to my portable kit.

I just purchased a set up for the yaesu line of radios, then found this video! Awesome job explaining! I have enjoyed your videos also. K7PEW

I bought a Digirig recently to test Winlink with an HT over the new VHF gateway we are experimenting with. Works fine in testing with a Baofeng GT-5R and my Yaesu FT70D. I do a LOT of digital. Winlink, NBEMS with fldigi, FT8 and others on a regular basis as part of my ARES group using HF and VHF using other devices. The Digirig is so compact it will become part of my portable gear. Digital modes are a large part of our emcomm plan. Jack K5FIT
  • Great work Kevin. I love my digital setup with this. While I wish modern radios didn’t need this interface, this solution is by far the most convenient. “No brainer” like you said.
  • @KO4VNX
Okay man, I'll buy one, stop yelling at me, no, no, don't hit me, I'll buy it, I'll buy it!!! All lame joking aside, well, you made this look pretty hard for me to screw up, so I am going to buy one of these! If this works, without me breaking it or getting electrocuted or impaled, I'll get back with you and let you know!
  • people say you could make your own cables. Yeah I could but they wouldn't be made as well as his cables are. They are really well made. I have one and will probably get a few more for my other radios. It is small and makes it nicer not carrying a big box with wires. I carry a tiny box with wires.

General question for anyone who can answer. I am not a digital or a big computer guy. There are options when you order the digirig mobile. My use will be with an FT891, Vx6r and made some baofengs with a windows laptop. If I understand the description correctly, I would order the default Loguc Levels option... correct? Of course cables that match my radios. Thanks for any help.

Hi Kevin - I am all set-up and using my Yaesu FT-710 "backyard portable" as you suggested. I have a 20AH battery and a whip antenna. I am in Oregon and have used 20M to contact hams in Florida and all across the Midwest. My next question for you: What is the best way to get started with digital? There are so many programs to choose from. What would be your advice for a beginner? Thanks again for all your help and advice. I truly appreciate it. Jim

Would have appreciated to see it in use.........set-up, what is done with this, why should I care, how do I actually send email, etc. Digital is still a foreign use concept to me.
  • @sanjithnair3266
Just I got my Digirig and I make a quick try with 891 it is not working for me. Audio level is too high on my FT8 progam. And radio is transmitting but I cant see any RF on my power meter.

Buy 1? Wife interested? Buy 6, spare for her, spare for me and a spare for the girlfriend that we'll call... Alex... 🤣

Stop it! Every HAM on the YouTube " I'm a Content Creator, I'm gonna get rich making half truth videos" is selling this same gadget like it's the second coming of christ. You can do the same digital modes with a $9 USB sound card from Amazon!
