I never get enough of these chipping technique vids. There have been too many rounds where I'm inside 40 yds and end up taking 4-6 more shots to end the hole. It's SO frustrating!!!

For the majority of my chip shots, I use a 9 iron. Was taught by a great teacher 30 years ago. I get up and down allllll the time. Like 60 to 70% of the time. Even from a long distance (like 30 yards) I use it. The only time I don't is when there is too much rough in front of me etc. I hold the heel up slightly off the ground so it doesn't get stuck on the shot. And using the 9 iron all the time I have gotten real good at it (as opposed to using several different clubs). Works for me.

I've really been getting into the rule/ratio of 12 for these shots. It helps a bunch
  • Jason Day calls it “using your big muscles” to chip & pitch ! 👍 Great vid !
  • Thank you so much for the tips! I find your videos very helpful and I have benefited from them greatly!

Far and away, the most consistent and effective tool on the green is a chipper. Cleveland Smart Sole chipper with a large or putter grip.

Bull's Eye, MSG ... You manage to play the BEST courses. Your YTs are always fun to watch.
  • Great instruction, short and to the point. This will help my chipping in the next round.
  • Spot on MSG. I tend to use PW more often on the course I play. But I’m comfortable with my higher lofted clubs too. The tip about the slightly open face is great. Keeps from digging and uses the bounce.
  • I’m watching this a few times over to get it programmed in my brain. It will take some practice to apply all of this it won’t come naturally that’s for sure but thank you for all the great tips I’ve applied some of the other tips from your other videos and it has really helped my game tremendously… Thank you!
  • Re-watched this video this morning before my round and spent like 15 min practicing with my pitching wedge before I started, managed 3 "up and down's" although only one was for a par. Thanks for the good advice, and keep up the good work!

Hey Matt! Great tips! Can you specifically show downhill lies next to the greens? That’s my biggest trouble shot. Thanks
  • 9-iron for bump and run on long chips (40+ feet or so). 58° for everything else. Thats what works for me 👍

Great lesson! Mr. SG you are the perfect short game guru for this. Given your West/East coast background, can you please do a detailed video on how to chip/pitch off bermuda lies constrasting with playing on the West coast grass. We love ya!
  • Thank you very much for your valuable advice on approach shots. My game is really a lot better now and I'm more confident around the greens and my score is a lot lower.
  • Timely video for me. I’m recovering from a ligament strain in my right shoulder so my golf is limited to chipping and putting. It’s forcing me to use my torso instead of my hands on my swings. I can see an improvement in my short game in the near future. Keep the vids coming.
