    The 2 different approaches take up roughly the same space in the yard. I'm planning on making a "tiki" hut and putting the array on the roof of the hut so it is less obtrusive in the yard. The much lighter weight of this approach allows that also.

    Yes, for thermal solar, it is my experience that the less tubing, the better. Any time you heat water, it causes the minerals to participate out, and they collect inside the tubing. It is almost impossible to clean out the tubing when it's thin and winds back and forth. The other thing is at night, the more tubing you have, the more heat it saps out of the hot water.

    Pretty neat project bruce. I put together a simple solar heater out of pipe and a small pump today and stumbled on this... It's ambitious, looks great, do you get the thermal pay off from less tubing but focused light per square foot of space used in the yard?
