Getting on the property ladder is expensive, but it doesn't have to be, there are abandoned places around the world where you can buy a whole town, city or village for less than the price an average home in most countries.
Ok you'd be lonely, but you could make yourself the mayor, you wouldn't have to worry about neighbours, and you could have parties as loud as you wanted, but even though some of these ghost towns are ridiculously cheap, they do come with some rather odd conditions.

  • The problem in the U.S. is all the rules and requirements to get stuff. I found offers for "free" everything online and when I called all the numbers, all the rules prevented me from getting anything. The rules cancel almost everyone out. They should not offer free things, when it is nearly impossible to get it.
  • I literally am watching the guy who bought cerro gordo and this reminds me of it Note: I have not watched this dude in a year, I stopped right after I made this comment
  • You mentioned a ghost town in Colorado with a tragic past at the start of the video but didn't actually cover it.

With the rise of "work from home", these old remote places will in my mind slowly come back to life in a coming decade.

A town that is claimed to be free but you are required to renovate it is simply not free. Violates the definition of “free”.
  • A lot of small railroad towns were abandoned. They were used to be water stops for steam locomotives. After the railroads switched to diesel locomotives they were obsolete
  • 3:03 "You might get lucky and find a little bit of gold." Well, for one, that nugget is more than just a little bit of gold. However, the bigger issue is are you buying MINERAL RIGHTS or the associated mining claim that allows you to gather said gemstones or gold from your property? When you purchase property, mineral rights do not always convey. So, finding a nugget like that might just mean that you have to turn it over to the person who owns those rights. Now, wouldn't that suck?
  • The Italian town that the goverment cares to keep alive willing to pay $10,000 if I moved their for life.HOOK ME UP.
  • I'd buy a town as long as terms were reasonable and I could care less about sketchy history so I'm good there.
  • @ViewThis.
That Lucin Phone Booth....Superman has been looking for that. In this age of cell phones he no longer has a place to change.
  • I've been driving around the US for a year now, just trying to find a place to be. I'll take a free town, that no one can threaten to tow me for parking.
  • Like the old saying goes, " if it's to good to be true it usually is" lol
  • St Elmo is mostly privately owned visited in 2016 a lot of snowmobiles and hunting. Still really cool to visit.
  • Actually, Lucin, Utah was purchased back in 1997 by an engineer and still owned by the man.
  • Give me 10.000 I'll move in a heartbeat bringing some of my family alone we ain't got nothing here so we're game

This is so cool! Thank you for sharing this! Can you do a part two?
  • Getting food, fuel, and other utilities (water, electric, communications equipment) is the biggest problem. Rebuilding requires mareials and access. I think that discourages many people. It does sound good at first.
  • What would be wonderful is if the governments would take these old villages, fix them up and moved all homeless people into them.
  • More like these this is great I have ideas for an eco resort community with focus on local development and preservation I am looking for sites anywhere
