42 years later, people are still coming back to this song. Greatness never end with Joan Jett

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.

"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is a rock song written by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker and first recorded by the Arrows, a British rock band, in 1975. A 1981 cover by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, released as the first single from her self-titled album, became Jett's highest-charting hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming the number 3 song of 1982. Just played this for my 9 year old daughter in the car this morning and shared my love of Joan Jett with her. Told her this song came out when I was almost her age and how it changed everything for me- girls didn’t have to just sing, we could rock, too!! Showed her pictures of Joan Jett and explained just how badass she was and is (The Runaways, too!) Got to see Joan in concert once and she was so great! Would love to take my daughter to see Joan in concert some day with me. 🖤

Having grown up as a kid when this came out, I can confidently state this was the first time men proudly sang a rock song, who's lead singer was a female.

Lyrics : I saw him dancing there by the record machine I knew he must have been about 17 The beat was going strong, playing my favorite song I could tell it wouldn't be long 'till he was with me Yeah me I could tell it wouldn't be long 'till he was with me Yeah me Singing I love rock and roll So put another dime in the jukebox baby I love rock and roll So come and take your time and dance with me He smiled so I got up and asked for his name But that don't matter he said cuz it's all the same He said can I take ya home, where we can be alone And next we're moving on, he was with me Yeah me Next we were movin' on, he was with me Yeah me Singing I love rock and roll So put another dime in the jukebox baby I love rock and roll So come and take your time and dance with me He said can I take ya home where we can be alone Next we're moving on, he was with me Yeah me And we'll be movin' on and singing that same old song Yeah with me Singing I love rock and roll So put another dime in the jukebox baby I love rock and roll So come and take your time and dance with me
