Travis Picking Basics - Learn 4 Fingerstyle Guitar Intros with Tab

Publicado 2022-12-15
Travis picking is the basis of fingerstyle guitar. For classical guitarists, Travis picking is easy if we know these three fundamental patterns. In this lesson I walk you through the basics of Travis picking using a simple pattern that gives us the riff to Landslide, then we alternate the bass to get The Boxer, then make one change to the first pattern to get the Dust in the Wind intro, and if we flip that pattern upside down we can then plan Blackbird.

  • HELLO. I would like to invite you to discover a Cuban (and Latin American (known throughout Latin America)) singer-songwriter, troubadour and guitarist named Silvio Rodríguez.  In the dozens of recordings that he has, he uses a lot of Travis picking (arpeggios), and other techniques. I recommend that you start by listening to the album "Mujeres" (Women), from 1978 (Silvio's third album).  I think he will like it. PS: Silvio sings in his native language, which is Spanish, the language of Latin America and Spain;  however music is a universal language. Greetings from Santiago of Chile, South America.
  • Apologies for being a nit-picker, but for the sake of actual accuracy, Merle Travs DID NOT use 2 fingers and thumb to play his particular style - he only used his thumb and index finger ONLY - don't ask me how he managed it, but that is the plain fact - what you are teaching is more of the Chet Atkins technique - have yet to come across a You Tube channel that has got this right - plenty out there claiming their way is THE way, but everyone seems to have lost sight of the fact that is Merle Travis used only one finger and his thumb to do it - even his son, the late (and highly talented and entertaining)Tom Bresh said the Merle Travis PROPER technique was unique!
