Pitfall, Freeway, Kaboom!, Pitfall, Keystone Kapers, these are the games I had as a kid. So I absolutely would love to see Activision release a collection for the Switch…

Clearly the only answer is to have both!

I'm going to go with Atari 50 because of all the extras and the variety, which is more my style rather than just a big compilation of 2600 games
  • The T for Teen rating on Atari 50 is due to the interview clips, and has nothing to do with the content of the actual gameplay.

Great point about an Activision Classics collection. It's actually shocking that we haven't seen one yet. Such a no-brainer given how retro games more popular now than ever.

For a much younger person you are clear, concise and your annunciation is impeccable, I understood every word you said and didn't feel condensended to. I truly appreciate that in a reviewer. Your affect is a little flat but that's really NOT a criticism, just an observation. You show that you know what you're talking about and that makes me trust in your experience and opinions. Excellent presentation and I look forward to seeing more of your work. Thank you.

exactly what I wanted to see (Atari Flashback Classics vs Atari 50) - thanks for doing this for us!
  • I want to say thank you to everyone who pointed out that it's because of the interviews that Atari 50 is rated T. While I really didn't know, my surprise was more just being goofy and having fun with it. Anyway, thanks for watching everyone and I appreciate the comments!

Atari 50 on sale right now at Best Buy for Black Friday sales, I think some other stores too I think, pretty dope!
  • From someone from the U.K. born in 1970, we had the VCS and that was it from Atari. Home computers had taken over to such a point that the 80s consoles just weren’t a thing. The video games crash and even the so called saviour, the mighty NES, didn’t impact the U.K. as it did in North America. Over the years I’d always considered Atari as something inconsequential although knowing there must be so many things I just didn’t know. I mean how could I when it was long before the internet and international TV offered the likes of The Waltons and The Dukes of Hazzard. The Atari 50 collection is the only time I’d ever looked at an Atari item. It’s the history that I don’t know about containing accurate information I’m unable to glean from the internet without a lot of difficulty and piecing together. To have the games documented, presented and playable to this standard is quite frankly astounding. The classics collection gives me none of that. I have no interest in online or any score that’s been posted by someone insignificant. For others they may see it in the complete opposite way, but for me I wish all collections were done like Atari 50.
  • I wish they would have made an affordable mini console version of the 50th anniversary collection

AtGames also worked with Atari on the Flashbacks collections on Switch, whereas Digital Eclipse handled Atari 50. Even though AtGames often gets a bad reputation for how they have emulated games and consoles in the past, it sounds like they were paying attention this time. The "T" rating by the ESRB for Atai 50 is largely because of the documentary sections. The interviews contain a lot of profanity/crude dialogue and openly discuss how the staff at Atari did drugs at the company back in the 1970s. If you're looking for a compilation of games that also explores gaming history successes and failures in an unfiltered way, then Atari 50 would be the way to go.
  • Excellent video kaptain! Really breaks everything down. Absolutely love Atari 50 just for the jag stuff 😝
  • Recently ordered Atari 50 for the PS5. Mainly found it because it has Cloak & Dagger on there. I've played that game a few times on a cabinet up in Funspot, NH and really want to play it some more at home. I was able to use credit card points on the game and so I basically got it for free. All the other games are gravy at this point :) Thanks for this comparison and the how to unlock the confidential games video!

Thanks for the review. I also contemplated which collection to get, once I became aware of both. I went with the Atari 50, mostly because of the reimagined Yar's Revenge, and the fact that it has more Atari systems represented. I was particularly disappointed however that neither collection came with Space Invaders! Atari made 2600 games were (by and large) not as much fun as the games put out by Activision and Parker Brothers for the 2600 system. I would buy an Atari Activision collection, so long as it included the Atari 5200 versions of games.
  • I definitely went with both game compilations that way you get the best of both worlds as they say. 😎👍
