“Rule 1: Never let your guard down even when surrounded by allies.” That is genuinely the most cliché shit every fighting teacher/sensei says in fiction.

man, that guy on the phone seems like a strong guy that would once forge a sword that is going to end up in a weapon shop that would only be for display even though it looks so equipped-able

This would actually work really cool in a story. Like the reason the main character is mastering all the challenges their teacher throws at them is because the teacher massively scaled down the difficulty level, because they ended up accidentally killing their first student. So every time the protagonist is like "c'mon give me something harder" the teacher just gets flashbacks to them killing their student and goes "absolutely not". Their journey could be about them moving on from the students death, and learning to trust themselves with giving others more difficult training challenges. So ye. Make a teacher who's afraid of challenging their student.

This is actually the Sensei’s backstory of why he vowed to never teach again, a vow he will later break when the protagonist shows up
