NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF TYPHOON PHENOMENAL ACCELERATION HOW MANY SECONDS? • RAF CONINGSBY

This is instant! Just how many seconds does it take to climb to a flight level in Eurofighter Typhoon? FL150 or FL190, the Typhoon's thrust to weight ration is phoonomenal. Check these Performance Takeoffs from the 27th June 2024.

Performance departures at RAF Coningsby are reminiscent of the English Electric Lightning, which would leave any spectator stunned as the Lightning would climb and accelerate vertically within seconds. Count how many seconds it takes for the Typhoon to not ONLY get airborne, but when it pulls back to accelerate vertically.

Both the Typhoon and English Electric Lightning had similar performance where the thrust to weight ratios of both aircraft were a 1:1 ratio, allowing the aircraft to accelerate vertically. The Lbs of thrust produced from the aircraft was more than the weight in Lbs of the aircraft. Of course, the more payload, the less acceleration, but with this sort of power, it doesn't bother them too much.

Aircraft have to request a Performance departure, they are not allowed to execute it without the clearance from ATC. There are many reasons for PTO, such as a short runway, clear aircraft traffic, barriers, problems on runway, or even just to get to somewhere fast.

Reheats or Afterburners?
Both are the same thing but “Afterburners” is a US term and “Reheats” is a UK term.

Not all PTO's (Performance Take Off) mean that they go into vertical climb on departure, because some are simply a real or a practice QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) style departure. A QRA is a scramble to intercept threat to UK airspace.

RAF Coningsby, TED HQ, in Lincolnshire is one of two RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Stations which protect UK airspace. RAF Lossiemouth is the other. There is also a third out in the Falkland Islands at RAF Mount Pleasant which 1435 Flt protect the airspace there.

29 Squadron are based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, one of two Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) stations in the UK. During World War One, 26 of the pilots had achieved 'Ace' Status. Aircraft flown have included the Mosquito, Phantom and Tornado F3. Today, 29 Squadron are known as an Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) who train RAF combat air pilots on the Typhoon, ready for front-line operations.

  • What always gets me is how early the 'Phoon can rotate and go into that climb. That and the fact that unlike the F-15 it gives enough time to retract the gear without having to delay, coming off the afterburners, to do it. No wonder we're Phoonatics! ❤ :_RAF::_typhoon2::_mog::_TCS::_lfa::_ted2:
  • Blimey that should settle your breakfast! Well done those magnificent men and there flying machines of Coningsby. WOW!:_typhoon::_RAF:
  • RAF Typhoon aircrews, outstanding ❤ ! They certainly know what those aircraft are capable of. Jaw dropping Performance Take Offs especially, magnificent!! Proud & privileged to see them in action. Great footage Ted. ❤:_typhoon2::_typhoon2::_RAF::_raf2::_ted2:
  • This angles are insane. And the capabilities of the Typhoon! We have "only" Eurofighters here around and I immediately recognise their flight noise in the video. Stunning how easy the plane types are distinguishable by how they sound inflight.
  • Amazing to think the English Electric Lightning could stand on its tail from take off 60 years ago. But its still an Amazing sight to see these Typhoons doing it. THAT SOUND!
  • Just love the "mighty phoonies"! So lucky to live in the great county of Lincolnshire & see these incredible aircraft regularly, unmistakeable noise and such power & agility:_RAF::_typhoon2::_typhoon::_look::_nikos::_ted::_ted3:
  • That was incredible great footage all those twists and turns. Totally amazing. Great pilot training gets them to an incredible standard. The best of the best. :_blackjack::_f15::_vulcan::_usaf::_f35::_RAF::_RAF::_raf2::_raf2:
  • Whilst the PTO is magic the movement in the air, acceleration as they continue to climb. They move, roll and rotate beautifully then the turn out? They were high.Typhoon is a unbelievable aircraft. Take that! And ride ! ❤:_typhoon2:❤:_typhoon::_ted::_RAF::_look::_nikos:
  • @sandywinn
The thrill of seeing and hearing this is sensational ❤
  • The Phoon is an amazing aircraft flown by amazing pilots……being filmed by our amazing Nikos :_RAF::_typhoon::_ted3:❤️🫡
  • I love the typhoons that was awesome thank you Ted and nikos :_typhoon::_typhoon::_typhoon::_typhoon:
  • Ted/Niko...been doing some calculations for you. You were explaining thrust with Reggie. So using the Typhoons numbers here goes. 20,200 x 1550 gives us 31,310,000 divided by 375 gives us 83,493 horsepower. Now a horsepower is approximately 8 times that of a human which brings that figure to 667,947 human power. Now I figure Reggie is 1/5th of that. So a Typhoon has 3,339,733 Reggie power :_reg:
  • @apuuvah
Sound of Freedom. The European F-15.
  • Reminds me of watching an EE Lightning doing similar in the late 60s. Airshow at RAF Benson I seem to recall.
