I played the Japanese version of this game, and so I wasn't aware of the changes done to the English version until recently. In the Japanese version, Link writes the Quest Log and he shares some of his personal thoughts and feelings regarding Zelda that we don't see in any other version, except the Russian I think (if I am wrong, feel free to correct me). However, I think they are important given how it is the original version. Anyways, I've translated his notable comments here if anyone is interested: 過酷だった剣の試練を乗り越え マスターソードの力を余さず使いこなせる 肉体と精神力を 手に入れた きっとゼルダ姫も 成長を祝福してくれているだろう (“Finally I have overcome the difficult Trial of the Sword. I have gained the strength, both physically and mentally to wield the Master Sword to its fullest. I believe that this will also make Zelda happy and that she will bless my growth.”) According to Toffa's grandfather, Princess Zelda once rode a white horse gracefully. They said it was a beauty unmatched in this world.”) 13か所の思い出の地を巡りゼルダ姫の想いを受け取った。 (“I have visited and taken in all 13 locations where Zelda's memories were.”) 思い出の中のゼルダ姫はいつも一所懸命だった。。。 (“Within all those memories, Zelda was always striving forward with all her might.”) 一刻も早くゼルダ姫を救い出して彼女の笑顔をもう一度この目で見たい。 ("I need to save Princess Zelda as soon as I possibly can, for I wish to see her smile once more with my own eyes.") This expands on Link's personality at least a little bit, I'm not sure why Nintendo of America left it out. It also shows how he feels very personally attached to Zelda, i.e. he worries about not being able to save her in time, writes about her beauty, and wants to make her proud of him. The reason this is significant is because no other girl is mentioned in this journal. Yes, one could argue that Link only writes about Zelda's beauty because others have told him of it, but many other girls like Mipha also had countless people adoring their beauty, and Link doesn't write about it so we can never see his personal thoughts of it. Clearly he thinks about Zelda a lot throughout his quest, which is why I started supported their pairing. It's also nice to see his wish come true at the end, as he does get to see her smile once more. Anyways, just some extra information to consider.

I like how in Skyward sword everyone besides Zelda hates Links guts and in BOTW everyone wants a slice of the Link pie.

The last scene shows one more thing besides the falling petals (good catch btw my man) it shows Link walking NEXT to Zelda. Before in almost every cutscene Link is following Zelda, demonstrating knight and princess roles. He is always following her and now they walk side by side as equals. They've reached a point where they are beyond knight and princess. Not to mention that she tells him that she is alright with not being able to hear the voice in the sword anymore and that she is fine with that. Before she was always frustrated with herself and her life and in her diary she goes over how Link feels the same way but just keeps a brave face. They both feel the weight of the world and deal with it in different ways but look to confide in each other rather than putting it out there for the world. These two were left with a destiny neither asked for and have lost what little they had for it. The Champions, their friends, their families, their way of life. Even if you wanted to be a realist and say not everyone who shares trauma necessarily falls in love it sure as hell puts your foot in the door. It may just be in my head but the Triforce and this world loves balance. Power, Courage, and Wisdom. The two who concur the bad guy has something more then just a list for power. They have love and it can be the most powerful thing any one can experience in life or fiction.
  • Silent Princess. Like, the Princess and her Silent Knight. It's in the damn name people.
  • Am I the only one who shipped Link and Zelda before I even started playing the games?

Link : Finds Zelda's diary READS IT Zelda : TRIGGERED

I always assumed that Link walked behind Zelda in the memories because he's her subordinate. Kind of like how Prince Philip walks behind Queen Elizabeth, even though he's her husband. No one walks next to the monarch. In the very last cut scene of the secret ending, they walk next to each other, or I guess he runs to her and she waits for him and then they walk together. It symbolized to me that their relationship had changed to be more equal, maybe more intimate, definitely less formal.
  • @sotanofangirl
"The infinite falling petals represent endless love" crying instantly
  • Or maybe there is a 4th outcome; He didn't love her before the calamity, but after the calamity he regained his memories and realizes he loves her after the calamity? Idk lol
  • In that last scene....when you get all your memories. If you look at the Japanese version of the game, the adventure log is actually in first person and there is one extra entry, where link states something along the lines of" I just want to see her smile one last time" which explains part of the extra ending with Zelda awkward smile. Because we all know of a "fake smile" which is assumed to be what she does in the memories. The weird smile at the end is the smile link wanted to see again. Its her true smile and not the fake one.
