Early to mid Nineties, the NFC Championship games were the real Super Bowls. These were tough competitive games. Instant classics, especially all these Cowboy/49er games.
-
This game had so much hype for all football fans, I’ll never forget it. I miss Pat and John so much though ☹️
-
R.I.P. John Madden A football icon.
-
I remember watching these great Cowboys and 49ers games as a youngster in the 90s. During half time, we would grab the 🏈 and play touch in the street. Great times.
-
Best NFL rivalry of the 1990s hands down. I'm 55, I know, I remember those games.
-
Great players, muddy uniforms, no scripted celebrations, just raw emotion. These teams had some great games.
-
One of the most legendary rivals filled with some of the most iconic games of all time
-
Alvin Harper’s catch late in the 4th quarter with the game on the line was absolutely clutch
-
The absolute Pinnacle of our sport. Especially with Pat and John. Classic. ✌️🇺🇸
-
The best rivalry of the 90s
-
I remember watching that game with my dad RIP dad one day will get back too super bowl
-
Now THIS was championship football at its finest. Not just the game, but the telecast as well. Everyone saw this coming when the season started.
-
Fittingly, this game- like Sunday- is also on CBS

NFC Championship games like this really opened my eyes as to why the AFC lost every Super Bowl from 84-96. NFC teams like these 49ers and Cowboys were so complete on offense and defense. They had playmakers at almost every position. The AFC's best teams during this same era (Bills, Broncos, Dolphins, Bengals, Steelers) always had glaring weak spots that were easily exploited by the stronger NFC. They either had great defenses, but bad offenses (Steelers) or great offenses but bad defenses (Dolphins, Broncos, Bills)
-
At that time, this was the real Super Bowl, the next game was just a formality.
-
One of the great things about experiencing the absolute gauntlet that was the NFC in the 90s was having Madden and Summerall call most of those battles. Those two guys were total class acts.
-
I remember being so excited for this game. Felt like the superbowl before the superbowl.
-
One of my finest Cowboys moments!!
-
The final season of the old NFL. Before the salary cap, before free agency, before the draft had rounds removed, before the 2-point conversion...
-
The Cowboys' first win over the 49ers since 1980 (when they slaughtered them, 59-14, at Texas Stadium) and their last road playoff win until the 2022 NFC Wild Card game.
