Ukraine was apparently regarded as the brains of the Soviet Union. If the Russian leadership was 10% as smart as it thinks it is, it would know that the best way to protect Russian security would be to treat its neighbours with respect and true friendliness, not as countries to bully, attack and colonise. The reality is that, if Russia was not such a deeply imperialist, aggressive and entitled county, neighbouring countries would have no interest in being part of NATO. At the start of Putin's Tsardom, Ukranians had little interest in NATO. This only came about when Putin started his imperialist adventures, cynically stirring up trouble in the Donbas and using the people of the Donbas as pawns in his geopolitical games.
