I love how depending on who you talk to the CIA is either pretty bad at their job or are somehow manipulating everything on Earth from the shadows.
  • On causal criminalist, Simon told us what actually happened, now, he’s just having fun by dunking in a ridiculous theory. Peak Simon behaviour

When you live long enough, it's so strange. I knew a couple who had been members of the People's Temple when it was in Indiana. They said it was genuinely a beautiful community, and they were bummed out that they couldn't afford to go to California. They were shocked at the news from Guyana. Now days, I'm old, and go to a dog park and meet old former whatevers, and met a student from Guyana who said that ever since the Jonestown thing, religions are hugely monitored, and it's against the law for them to buy tracts of land beyond a church building. Most people don't even like religions there, now.

24:29 begging Simon to understand that they weren’t mind controlling wildcats. The term means an off the books unregistered operation.

Thanks for making this one! My grandmother was almost among the Jonestown victims--only the fact that my uncle was entering his senior year of high school and needed support writing his college admissions papers, etc. persuaded her to postpone her plans to follow Jones to Guyana. She was a staunch civil rights activist, and frankly she and many of his followers would LOVE to have been on CIA/FBI watchlists, because that would mean they were making a difference. But, alas, the only thing it was a front for was a narcissistic predator who did a ton of drugs, just not the government issued ones. She lost friends, and a lot of illusions. I can't watch the Casual Criminalist episode--like Bundy it hits too close to home...literally. But this gave me some grim amusement while keeping superficial to the depths of the tragedy, so I appreciate it.

Hell yeah, I’ve got 10 minutes left of the new CC and now a new DTU?! The Whistlerverse really does love me
  • I’m from Guyana. The whole thing with Guyana at the time was that the government was heavily involved with the Soviet Union. The country was pretty socialist at the time. Interestingly enough around that time, the 70-80s, the government nationalised a lot of companies. The one I know the most about was a bauxite mine owned by Alcoa. I was once told that the socialist government, was one of the reasons Jim Jones chose Guyana. As far as military, they have one but I don’t think that there is any reality where it would have been a threat to the US. But, I could see the Soviet Union, having a base or something in the country at that time. Oh! French Guiana is a different country from Guyana. Suriname is between them.

Everyone in the Whistleverse needs to start greeting each other with the word McUltra & the reply has to be Allegedly

I love how Simon constantly tells viewers not to watch his CasCrim vids. It's big brain strategy because i think he know that we are all weirdos and will instinctively watch videos that he finds disturbing. Galaxy brain self promo.

“Wildcat” behavior modification would have had nothing to do with actual wild cats. It is simply a phrase indicating an unauthorized and probably questionable activity.

You know like a year ago I was talking about Jonestown with my sister and my dad just casually comes up and says “you know we had a relative that died there, right?” And we were like???? What??? And he has no more information, just that his mom recognized one of the deceased as her relative

Re: MK Ultra, the Behind The Bastards did a great job on it and how absolutely hilarious it was. They accidentally discovered for themselves the best way to get people to do what you want: threats, sex, money...
  • @xonlyxjojox
Regarding the congressman, he was an investigative journalist as well. He was one hell of a person. If I’m not mistaken, He was involved in covering couple of infamous incidents.
  • really isn't all that outlandish, when you consider how Charles Manson was an MK ultra victim
  • @itarry4
Don't know how long between videos but it's so Simon to be suprised by Jim Jones's interest in Hitler. He was interested by his ability to talk and attract people with just his personality.
  • @rachelb4398
I like when Simon says "in cahoots". Also, the audio has greatly improved on this channel over the past few weeks--thanks, and great job, y'all!

Thank you Arnaldo for speaking the truth amd helping the end of the besmirching of Kool-Aid's good name. Flavor-aid is the tainted powdery drink of choice of cults!
  • @valolafson6035
It's definitely more comforting, and easier, to believe it was a conspiracy. Then you don't have to confront that people are very capable to doing terrible things to each other, without the government being involved.
  • You know, if the theory was "The CIA had Jim Jones on their radar, in the 1960s, knowing that Jones was a passionate pro civil rights socialist the CIA hatched a plan to goad the unstable leader to discredit similar movements in the US." I'd have bought that, sounds exactly like what they tried to do and tacitly admited too with MLK.
