John Oliver explains why we need honest inquiry into UFO sightings, and why those inquiries should be data-driven, fact-based, and – crucially – boring as fuck.

In fairness, if someone told me they saw a flying object with the letters "UFO" written on it, I'd also laugh derisively

I think we should all take a moment and acknowledge the costume designer who made a bird mascot's facial expression exude pure unfiltered derision. Art. What a time to be alive.

I am a retired cop. I have answered the phone inside a police station in the middle of the night and had somebody tell me they saw a UFO. My response was to ask if the UFO had committed a crime or if there was any obvious threat to public safety. The answer was invariably “no” which removed the incident from my area of responsibility. I literally had no way to take a report for a UFO sighting if I wanted to do so. That makes sense because police should not be wasting scarce resources dealing with non-police matters. It does leave me wondering how difficult it must be for somebody who sees a UFO to find a government employee who is willing to take them seriously.

6:34 the screams after “deep mouths” are killing me especially with how delighted John looks at them

Getting vaporized wouldn’t be fun, but having it happen from an Alien labeled “Alien” and Death Ray labeled “Death Ray” would be one of the most hilarious ways to go ever
  • This is one of those John oliver episodes where I just have to stop to appreciate how well this show is written and made. Absolute gold, god damn :DDDD

Having John Oliver talk about something other than the depressing state of the world is a breath of much needed fresh air 😢

Once you identify a UFO, it becomes an FO. Unless it lands, then it's just an O.

It is fantastic to see John Oliver talk about this phenomenon! I was a Navy submariner, and I can't talk about the things I saw underwater, but I can talk about what I saw before I joined the Navy. I was crew on the tallship Argus out of Newport Beach CA. One cruise I was standing watch, about 0200 hours I saw a large object pass below the keel amidships while we were anchored in Cat Harbor, Catalina Island. We had three guys on watch, one on the bow, one amidships, and one on the stern. Cat Harbor is long and narrow, we had to make sure we weren't dragging anchor. This thing was big, maybe 30 feet wide. I saw a green glow from below the boat and looked down over the gunwhale. Saw something very wide and glowing green passing below the boat amidships. I called out to the other watchmen and the fellow from the bow came down to join me. This thing was huge, we thought it was a whale, and maybe it was glowing green from disturbing the plankton in the water. We decided to explain it that way and note it in our logs, but I don't really believe that - it was too big, and too bright green. The brightest green I have seen the ocean is when waves are breaking in plankton rich waters, this was brighter than that. I had no other frame of reference at the time, but now after hearing reports of USOs I think it may have been that. Super weird.

Check out Jean-Pierre Petit PhD interview in Prague. He's a French plasma physicist that led a team of researchers to test plasma engines in supersonic wind tunnels. It turns out that plasma heating and magnetic flow control around a plane wing, sphere, cylinder or disc shaped airfoils can totally eliminate the sonic boom produced at multiple times the speed of sound. The designs look uncannily like the tic tac and flying saucers.

" my snake looks like that but this is actually a different snake. Someone come get your snake" was a truly hilarious end to that bit
  • @Mwstmrlnd
The "I know where my snake is" bit was such good comedic acting, those facial expressions were perfect. All around amazing segment, you can tell when the writers enjoy writing about things that are a little more lighthearted

I’m a commercial pilot, and I fly around Mt.Rainer often. If you google “standing lenticular clouds” those are characteristically known for having a “flying saucer-like” appearance, and most often form around mountainous areas. I would bet that those get mistaken for UFO’s quite often, and I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned in this video.
  • Glad to see this topic covered here. We don't know anything for sure, except for the fact that people are having these experiences. Deserves attention, and very open minds.

Nothing like waking up on Thursday and watching my favorite Brit talk about UFOs.

I never thought I would see such a fair look at UFOs from John Oliver. Really good work!

Eating cereal at 2 am, I nearly spit out my milk when he said "That John C Reilly character 😂😂😂

I'm glad John Oliver points out at the beginning the fact that the term "UFO" or "UAP" doesn't mean "extraterrestrial", it means we don't know what it is. It doesn't have to be from space for it to be potentially dangerous, and I'm happy that the government if finally starting to try and remove the stigma of reporting this stuff from our service men and women.
