The Baccala wreck divers went to the Andrea Doria for a couple of days of diving on June 8th 2012. The water was cold even at the deco but we got three good dives in.

  • For those of you wondering, the Chrysler Norseman was found in 1994 by a diver. He noted that the car was nothing more than a pile of rust, and that only the wheels were still recognizable. Now I imagine the car had completely rusted away. The ship itself is not long for this world. In recent years, the funnel abs masts have collapsed, and most of the superstructure is gone as well. The hull is also slowly falling in on itself.

All those poor souls.... unable to rest with this music playing.

Years ago a diver did managed to get into hold where the Chrysler Norsman was and there were other cars there as well. He wrote that it was a dangerous dive as the ship had deteriorate to the point where it had become unstable and parts of the ship's interior had collapsed making it difficult to get to where the cars were. On entering the hold, he found everything was so corroded to the stage where it was hard to make out what the cars even were. He finally found the once beautiful Chrysler Norsman an unrecognizable pile of rust. The wooden crate the car was put in had long once rotted away. And the only things left of the car were the white wall tyres, the hemi engine block and the class. I not sure wheather he took pictures or not.
  • Not a bad video ,but the music sounds like it belongs in a porn movie.

It fascinates me how nature can take something like a beaten old shipwreck and turn it into a living thing. Nature accepts everything as part of itself and works its wonders. This planet is amazing and people ought to be appreciating and respecting it a lot more.

That deep and that dark makes it really hard to appreciate the scope of this once magnificent ship.

I was 6 or 7 when she sank and I remember the T.V. and later the newsreel coverage of the long sinking. I forget how many hours it took for the Doria to make her final plunge. Thank God most of the passengers were able to be rescued.

It's amazing people can actually go down like this..I would freak out with all the dark around and not knowing what was what...so thanks for showing us what most will never be able to go down and see..fascinating

The wreck of the beautiful Andrea Doria was fairly intact until a few years ago. The funnel and mast collapsed many years ago but the entire superstructure has now collapsed into a pile of rubble on the sea floor. Last reports were the bow has separated from the hull and the entire hull is slowly caving in. The wreck could be a large pile of rubble in the near future.

Great film!  I remember listening to the last few minutes of the sinking, live, on radio, as a boy in New York.  I've followed the wreck's decay in detail since that day, and occasionally give presentations with my friend who was on the scene as a young "C.G.'s man.  When I think of the main lounge and dining room swelling with violent incursions of seawater as the ocean burst in, I am galvanized.  I'd love to have a piece of that aqua and purple terra cota you showed.  Well done!

Thank you for sharing. The images confirm that there is no trace of shattered nobility left, just piles of decaying scrap covered with marine flora and fauna. I was 9 years old when the sinking occurred, but that year seemed dominated by the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia.

There's a great book on this called Deep Descent by Kevin F. McMurray. It's a great read and very informative about diving the Doria. Answers a lot of the questions people have posted. And this music is awful.

Has anyone tried to get into the hold where the Chrysler Norseman prototype was when the ship went down? I would really like to see someone try to bring this car back.
  • @BeagJohn
Divers using "tri-mix"go 400 feet down to the Britannic. Fascinating stuff.Cool video!
  • @TrueDisaster-
@lisdiver I'm glad I can live vicariously through videos like this as I will never be brave enough to do any real deep diving myself. These environments are stunning, despite the dark history.. Would it be possible to use some of this footage for a story I am working on about the death of a diver who made significant discoveries at this shipwreck? No worries if not!
