The problem with the "I'm stupid and incompetent" argument is that Sam graduated from MIT and got a job as a quant at Jane Street Capital. His parents are both professors at Stanford Law school and his brother is a Wall street trader. He knows what he is doing, and probably talked in lengths with them on how to spin this.
