  • I married my soldier 57 years ago and lost him 9 months ago. He served his 4 years in Vietman, but he was still a soldier the day he died. I just listened to Trace Adkins sing this song again. I'm still, and will always be, the wife of my soldier. My thanks every time I hear this song.
  • When my recruiter asked me why I wanted to enlist in the Army I think my answer surprised him. I said "this country has given me all I could ever ask. Good schools, a safe place to grow up, freedom. I think it's time I repaid some of that." My dad was with me and I heard him sniffle a bit. It took the sergeant a minute to respond and when he did he looked at my dad and said "I wish more of my recruits felt that way." Unfortunately an eye issue kept me from serving, something I have regretted ever since. It would have been an honor and a privilege to be able to wear my country's uniform.
  • I returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1971. When we landed, over 150 war protesters greeted us from behind the airport fence, just 50 feet away from the plane. About 20 MPs were stationed along the fence for security. It wasn't until 1986 that the city of Chicago finally decided to hold a "Welcome Home" parade for Vietnam veterans. At the time, I was working in downtown Chicago, so I was able to join the parade and march alongside others from the 1st Aviation Brigade in Vietnam. To my amazement, and the city's, 200,000 people participated in the parade, with an estimated 500,000 spectators lining the streets. The city had only planned for a maximum of 10,000 people, both in the parade and watching it, so traffic was tied up for hours and they were not happy. It was an incredible experience.

I am a German combat veteran and this song speaks right from the bottom of my heart! Sometimes I wish that songs like this would be popular in my country, too! I served and fought with pride and accepted the consequences... but even with a war at our door people still laugh at me and say I was stupid to enlisten...😢 Thanks to all brothers and sisters in arms who fight for the right reason...I salute you! ❤🎗🇺🇲🇩🇪🎗❤️
  • Been out since 2012. There isn’t a day goes by when my body doesn’t ache. I fought for an ungrateful and apathetic nation that seems to be going to hell in a hand basket, but damn it I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. I’m still a soldier.
  • I just got medically discharged from the Army a month ago. Served exactly 3 years. My life plan was to serve until retirement. But it got cut short thanks to mineres disease. If someone asked me would i do it all over again? You damn right i would
  • From this veteran who served as a combat medic for 30 years in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan and Iraq. I will always be soldier. I would go back if they would let me.

  • I was a British soldier for 30 years I fought in five wars for my country and it's true what this song says, my wife says that I am still in the army, but what did we really fight for when the youth of today have forgotten that the freedom and liberty that they enjoy today men and women fought and died for them

"And if they called and needed him back, he'd be on that plane." Damn straight... may be a little slower, not quite as nimble, but thousands and thousands of us would be there if the need arises. Thank you brother!
