The lesson begins by answering a few simple questions: What is the 12 bar blues? What are the I, IV, V chords? And how do we play blues in the key of A?

We learn the three easy chords needed to play it (A7, D7, E7 or A, D, E) discuss the theory behind them, and then we put them in a certain order - fitting them into 12 bars - and that's how we get our 12 bar blues!

First we strum it with a shuffle feel and then we add a classic blues rhythm - the boogie woogie rhythm, which works on acoustic guitar but is especially exciting on electric! I show you a simple trick for memorizing the 1, 4, 5 theory concept and applying that to the blues.

We finish off by learning an essential turnaround lick. I have I also have a super easy turnaround lick that we can learn too! With everything in this lesson you will be prepared to show up to a jam session and play the blues with confidence!

Enjoy!
-James

The blues is a massive topic. Today we covered the very basics... what other things about it would you like to learn?
  • Thank you. Have been struggling with this as 75 year old beginner. Very best video I’ve seen for clarity.
  • That was another awesome teaching James, many thanks! I found out why you are so good: you do not act like a show-off, you stick with the purpose of the teaching. really great!

I love how you broke this down and explained it so well and clearly. I wish I had taken the time to learn this 25 years ago when I first picked up the guitar.

That's my blues! I'm still into this...on acoustic. In E7, in A7, in C7. The riffs and licks are in process. Started late, practicing 7 years but I can't memorize my scales lol. I only can do the scales in E. That said, the 12 bar isn't hard. Later, I did "break" the 4 times let's say E7 I do E7/A7/E7/E7/E7. Then A7/A7/E7/E7, B7/...etc. Thanks James for this lesson! 🎶🎶🎶
