The Boso Peninsula boasts the largest number of hand-dug tunnels in Japan. Many of them were dug in the Meiji and early Showa periods, and many of them are nearly 100 years old. The reason why there are many hand-dug tunnels on the Boso Peninsula is because the geology of the Boso Hills is sandstone, which is soft and easy to dig.
[River diversion tunnel]
This is a river tunnel that was mainly built after the Edo period for the purpose of developing new rice fields. It was built to shortcut the meandering rivers that run through the sandstone terraces of the Boso Peninsula, and turn the original curved riverbed into rice fields.
Because it is soft and easy to dig, the ceilings of many tunnels have collapsed over time, leaving them as cut-throughs. The remains of Kobundo Cave in Yoro Valley Hot Springs is one such example.

そうです、このルートをよく南下してました。木村農園サンの先500m位を左折し水田の生き物観察をしながら最奥のお宅まで行ったこともあったっけ😅 この付近は30年前とあまり変わりませんね。ヒル対策、ナイロン系？素材のウェアもNiceです。昔はウィンドブレーカやレインウェア…でしたから。 あと、初めて知りましたが「ご趣味」なんですね。「映像系の仕事」をされている方の趣味版とばかり思ってました。改めて映像センスに脱帽です👏
