I visited Shibu Onsen, which has a 1300 year old history as the backwaters of Shinano. Shibu Onsen, one of the Yudanaka and Shibu hot spring villages, is said to have been discovered by the monk Gyoki during the Jingame period. During the Warring States period, it was managed by Yokoyuyama Onsenji Temple, founded by Shingen Takeda, which laid the foundation for the current hot spring resort. It is said that the nine outside hot springs in Shibu Onsen were established at this time, and that visiting the nine hot springs is said to be beneficial for the fulfillment of one's wishes and for longevity.

Shibu Onsen is known as a hot spring resort with three- to four-story wooden inns along the Yokoyu River, a tributary of the Yomase River. There are 40 sources, and the water is as hot as 70 to 96 degrees Celsius. Although the quality of the water is different from that of Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture, the hot water is the main selling point.

The area is also the gateway to the Shiga Kogen Plateau, and trade with the Jyoshu region has long been conducted here. Although disputes with other competing highways restricted the flow of goods to and from the area, the town had already organized hot spring tours combining the famous Kusatsu Onsen with a visit to Nagano Zenkoji Temple since the Edo period (1603-1868), attracting many visitors to the area for hot spring cures and pilgrimages.

Shibu Onsen was completely destroyed by fire in the early Meiji period (1868-1912), and all buildings from the Edo period have been lost except for some storehouses.
The oldest building is the Tsubataya Ryokan, which once served as the Sanada family's headquarters.
However, the main lodge is not the same as that of an inn town, but rather a designated inn where the lord of the Matsudai domain and high-ranking officials stayed.
