A free State under the Missouri Compromise of 1819, Maine used to have a distinguished position of power and authority after Statehood 198 years ago, next week. Noble members of the Maine Legislature, put the state in a position to shape the first century of the United States. A Senator from Maine refused to Impeach President Andrew Johnson on overblown trivial matters. As the nation's industry grew, so did it need to defend itself against world threats. The Battleship Maine was built as well as the Battleship Texas on the recommendation of the Maine delegation. The industrial might was unleashed and America began to be a world power where Maine would speak and ships and manpower met that challenges around the world. Now Maine does not have the effect it once had as larger states brush our needs and the needs of state like us aside. Four electoral votes is all the authority we have against states that put the same people in Congress year after year after year and is barely paid attention to by Presidential candidates.I doubt that Democrats or Republicans see the benefit of some of their long entrenched double talking counterparts in Congress. Maine term limits our community and state delegates to the State House, so why should our State House leave intact a 2/3 rule that few states have for any purpose other than to manage and control spending during the best and the worst of times? That is like a speed bump on a sidewalk for pedestrians.I don't see much use in the accumulation of political knowledge to keep for life if it never seems open to change or if the words of one POTUS brings cheers and for another brings jeers to turn the earth upside down under him! Yes there are also some good, devoted legislators on both sides, but to replace them, each voter must choose wisely. In the past, we have chosen celebrity from other walks of life who brought a new dynamic to the noble bodies of Congress. We chose as a nation to leave titles of nobility to England and vote on replacements according to a set schedule. We expected they will do their duty as their state requests. We may presume that each as they are elected that they are a lady or a gentleman as a matter of courtesy and not the in the form of arrogant privilege for which we should kiss their ring and bow as we leave their presence! We need to Term Limit Congress as we do for the President
