Why is losing weight so hard? We got a nutritionist expert to explain some of the reasons why you may be struggling to shift those pounds.

At some point in life, the majority of people will probably try some sort of diet or exercise regime to kick-start their weight loss goals, right? The diet industry in the US alone was estimated to be worth a staggering $71 billion in 2020 – so it's safe to say a lot of people are in the same boat.

But why is it so difficult to get the results that you're after? We got our myth-busting nutrition researcher, Richie Kirwan, to explain some of the issues surrounding dieting and weight loss.

  • Losing weight and being on the diet gets easier after a while. It’s maintaining it that’s tough because you get to this place where you start allowing yourself to indulge a bit more, and then after a while you’re back to square one. So that’s why I feel weight loss journeys are basically permanent more so than something to just do for a couple months.

  • Hi, a physiotherapist here. I'm not an expert in nutrition, that's not my field, but it's somehow related, you know, health, physical activity, etc. After watching this video all I can say is 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. I wouldn't add or remove a single comma.

Love it and knowledge of how the differect mechanisms in which we burn calories adapt as we diet makes for informed choices to overcome plateus. Totally disagree with the statement "if you have struggled with weight loss in the past, I want you to know... it's not your fault". It 100% is our fault. For 10 years I didn't put the fork down when I should have, adding more and more to my diet. Got to the point I would eat a large McDonald's meal as a snack before dinner. Sure, I was coerced, but it was my choice. Now I'm making better choices and half way to my ideal physique. Blaming our culture is not an excuse I am going to lean on to accept my obesity nor the days my willpower caves and I stray from the plan to better myself.
