It's important to go to welding school but it is more important to learn how to weld. It doesn't matter what you do just practice and keep practicing. Nobody can hold your hand. It's up to you

Welcome back! Moldy and rusty rods--this is a REAL welding channel!!! And older self-taught welder I knew (he made log splitters (fabbed up from mostly junkyard parts) and did tractor/farm implement repairs in his retirement used whatever he could make work. He didn't know squat about rod numbers but what he sorted out by trying them. I saw all sorts of odd rods in his "rod locker" (steel shelving in an uninsulated building). I'd ask about them, he'd tell me he found them. He was a pretty good welder and also did a lot of grinding and paint. He left school in the 8th grade and built houses (even my house) in his earlier days. I know he welded with some old nasty rods, and got the work done.

Great info. Went home after your instruction and welded for 2 hours just flicking and learning to get comfortable. Not a welder yet but getting there

First time I welded on a SA200 and it was in fourth gear. I was electrode negative, and the whole 1/8" 7018 lit up bright yellow and dripped off the stinger like a wet noodle. Glad there's channels like this I can learn from nowadays.

Thanks! I'm 73 and hated that I never learned to work metal. I bought a multi welder mig/stick/tight and a plasma cutter this Feb (birthday to myself). I can do some ugly work., but was pretty frustrated cause my stick kept getting stuck. I watched your flick thing, went outside and flicked away. Now I can start 6011, 7014 and probably all of them OK. Thanks again, great info. Love the channel. "Stickit"!!
