You know what I love the most about this sport…when it comes to having to use an emergency goalie, the commentators and fans are actually reasonable. They don’t get upset with the goalie, they don’t boo and hiss. They understand that it was a person who was not prepared to come into this game but is stepping up to make sure the game goes on. It’s honestly kinda nice to see rational people in public 😂
  • lmao... Dangle screaming about the 42 yr old Zamboni driver who works for them will always give me a grin.

first one will forever be legendary with ayres

I was an emergency goalie for a local pro senior A team. Didn't get to play, but sat on the bench. Super cool experience. Can't imagine doing that for the NHL.
  • the david ayer’s game hands down coolest thing in pro sports in a long time
  • Great vid. All the stories are good. But the first one, David Ayres, will still go down as legendary. Each home team has an emergency goalie at every home game, just in case. This 42 year old, hadn't played any hockey for 15 years, gets called up to take over in the middle of an NHL game, played the last 28 minutes of the game, saved 8 out of 10 shots, and helped the Canes win the game! There isn't a major sport where something like this (a non-roster true amateur playing a professional game) can happen.
  • Super classy of all the fans and players how they all rally behind the EBUG and cheer him on, regardless of who he's playing for.

Loved that from the oilers, such a class act

I played goalie all my life and always dreamed about this. One day, it almost came true. I was living in Prescott, AZ playing in the men's league and was told I was going to be a backup for the Arizona Sundogs minor team to the Coyotes. Unfortunately, I didn't get the play, but the excitement of that day is still with me many years later. It would have been my first pro game.
  • My favorite EBUG was Mikko Koskinen because the Oilers let him come out of the stands for over 150 games.

I was an emergency goalie for one of our local ice games. Nowhere near the level of the NHL, but still. My team had two goalies, me and my friend. We switched at half time so I was on the bench watching the second half of the game. About 5 minutes after I got off the ice the opponents only goalie got hurt. So I hopped back on and played for the other team. It was fun getting shot at by my own team and chatting with the other team. The amount of thank you’s and kind words I was given was so overwhelming and awesome. The whole rest of the game I was talking to the other team, having a blast with them. My team won the game but the entire opposing team still crowded me and were still happy even though they lost. After I got off the ice I was met by parents from the other team and parents of kids on my team all commending me for being backup. It was a hell of a night and I’m so glad it happened. I couldn’t even imagine the experience if it was in the NHL, but damn it would feel nice.

Ahhh yesss. Dave Ayres. The zamboni driver who could make Steve Dangle's vocal chords crack to new heights.
  • I love when the ebugs start playing the commentators are not only pumping them up but also complementing them and overall being good human beings because they understand that the dude in the net probably was not prepared to play in a fucking nhl game that day.
  • So Ayres dressed for a Carolina-based team when they visited Toronto twice in the same month? That'll be something to tell his grand kids.
  • @oddity4all2see
He got to play with the best player in the world and a bunch of other greats. I love the pure joy in all of the oilers faces. They're all stoked for him.
  • @eastflames55
What a memory to have, like they said, who cares how you do it. He can say he's been a goaltender inthe NHL.
  • I actually worked with Matt Berlin, the ebug for the oilers. Awesome guy
  • @Galastin
    "So you're saying he's well rested" 😆
